[August 15, 2026 update] Could Wyndham Diamond members soon receive free breakfast for two?
According to the Wyndham China elite-benefits page, Diamond members can choose either 500 points or free breakfast for two. The benefit appears limited to the 93 hotels listed on that page for now. Hopefully it will be expanded across the full group.
For points-and-miles travellers, Wyndham—sometimes nicknamed “Wyndham Auntie”—is difficult to ignore. It is one of the world’s largest hotel franchisors, with a huge and widely distributed economy and midscale portfolio, especially in North America and Asia, including China. Wyndham Rewards is known for a simple fixed award chart, accessible elite status, and relatively strong value, making it popular with value-focused travellers.
Wyndham Hotels & Resorts
Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, Inc. is headquartered in Parsippany, New Jersey. It is an asset-light company focused on franchising and was separated from Wyndham Worldwide, now Travel + Leisure, in 2018.
- Scale: roughly 8,300–9,000 hotels and 870,000–900,000 rooms in about 95–100 countries, serving approximately 138 million guests each year. Around 80% of the U.S. population lives within 10 miles of a Wyndham hotel.
- Business model: mainly franchising, with franchise and reservation fees providing steady cash flow and low capital spending.
- Positioning: primarily Economy/Value and Midscale, while expanding into upscale, lifestyle, and extended-stay brands. Its mission is to make hotels affordable for everyone.
- China: more than 1,600 hotels and 180,000-plus rooms across Greater China and more than 10 brands. Super 8, Ramada, Days Inn, and Wyndham are common, while Microtel and La Quinta are expanding.
Wyndham also partners with Caesars Entertainment, and some Caesars casino hotels participate in the program.

⚠️ ECHO Suites does not participate in Wyndham Rewards.
Economy and midscale hotels make up most of the portfolio, with a familiar North American roadside-motel feel. Upscale and lifestyle brands are smaller but growing. In China, local positioning can differ: Howard Johnson and Ramada, for example, are often positioned more upscale than in North America.
Elite status
Wyndham Rewards has four tiers: Blue, Gold, Platinum, and Diamond.
Calendar-year qualification requires direct booking and a paid stay of at least US$25 per night:
- Gold: 5 nights
- Platinum: 15 nights
- Diamond: 40 nights
Some qualifying nights can roll across calendar years. After qualifying, status is generally valid for the rest of the year and all of the following year, with a short additional grace period.
| Benefit | Blue | Gold | Platinum | Diamond |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Base points | 10/$1 or 1,000 minimum per stay | Same +10% | Same +15% | Same +20% |
| Preferred room | — | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Late check-out | — | ✓, subject to availability | ✓ | ✓ |
| Early check-in | — | — | ✓, subject to availability | ✓ |
| Suite upgrade | — | — | — | ✓, subject to availability and sometimes award stays |
| Welcome gift | — | — | — | ✓ at selected brands |
| Gift Gold status | — | — | — | ✓ once per year |
| Caesars Rewards match | — | — | ✓ | ✓ |
| Rental-car upgrade | — | — | ✓ | ✓ |
Most economy hotels have limited room types, so upgrades and suite benefits may have little practical value. Preferred rooms and late check-out are usually more useful. There is no standard executive-lounge or free-breakfast benefit, although some brands include breakfast.
Fast ways to obtain status:
- Credit cards: U.S. Barclays Wyndham cards offer Gold with the no-fee Earner, Platinum with Earner+, and Diamond with the Business and Premier cards.
- Wyndham Rewards Insider: about $95 per year, with Gold status and a points bonus.
- Status matches: matches with other hotel programs or Caesars may open during specific promotions.
- Occasional challenges and promotional offers.
Wyndham Rewards
Wyndham points expire after 18 months of account inactivity, and they also have a hard four-year expiration rule. Their estimated value is about 0.6–0.9 U.S. cents per point.
Earning points
- Direct eligible stays earn 10 points per dollar of room spend, with a 1,000-point minimum per stay. Some extended-stay brands such as WaterWalk may earn 5 points per dollar.
- You must book directly through the website, app, or phone. Third-party bookings such as Booking.com and Expedia generally do not earn points or qualifying nights.
- Selected brands, including Dolce, Wyndham, Wyndham Garden, and Wyndham Grand, may award points on the full bill.
- Elite bonuses are Gold +10%, Platinum +15%, and Diamond +20%.
- U.S. Barclays co-branded cards provide points and welcome bonuses.
- Chase Ultimate Rewards, Citi ThankYou, Capital One, and Bilt transfer at 1:1; Wells Fargo transfers at 1:2.

- Wyndham also sells points, often with 30%–40% bonus promotions.
Redeeming points
- Free nights are the core use: a fixed chart with no dynamic pricing or seasonal surcharges.
- Before September 15, 2026: 7,500 / 15,000 / 30,000 points per night.
- From September 15, 2026: 5,000 / 15,000 / 30,000 / 45,000 points per night. The lowest tier drops, a top tier is added for a small number of upscale or all-inclusive hotels, and most properties remain in the first three tiers.
- Go Fast points plus cash can reduce the points requirement:
- Before September 15, 2026: from 750 points plus cash.
- From September 15, 2026: four tiers from 500 points plus cash to 4,500 points plus cash.
- Cardholders generally receive 10%–25% redemption discounts.
- Cottages.com in the U.K. currently costs 15,000 points per bedroom per night.
- Caesars transfers are 1:1.
- Other options include gift cards, merchandise, experiences, charity, and selected airline partners, normally at lower value than hotel nights.
What makes Wyndham Rewards distinctive?
- Simple fixed chart: no dynamic pricing, making planning easy and peak dates potentially valuable.
- Low qualification threshold: Gold starts at five nights and the 1,000-point minimum accelerates earning at economy properties.
- Large footprint: useful for North American road trips and roadside stays, with many choices in China as well.
- Caesars partnership: elite matches can improve the value of casino hotels, although Diamond earned through cards may not qualify for every match.
- Credit-card and transfer support: U.S. cardholders can earn through welcome bonuses and multiple transfer partners.
- Strong value: for trips with many economy stays, points can return quickly and the program is often considered one of the best-value options.
Things to watch
- Large quality differences: economy motels vary in cleanliness and service, so read reviews. Upscale brands are limited.
- Award-chart change: the four-tier change on September 15, 2026 is one of the program’s largest adjustments. Consider locking in attractive hotels early; existing bookings follow the original price and lower prices are automatically refunded under the program rules.
- China: local franchisees can produce a different experience, and some low rates may not meet the US$25 threshold for a qualifying night.
- Booking and cancellation: award rooms may have blackout dates or limited inventory; cancellation rules vary by hotel and points are generally returned when cancellation is allowed.
- Expiration: log in or take another qualifying action periodically.
- Best uses: North American road trips, lower-cost stays, peak dates, and balances built through cards or transfers.
Wyndham is not the first choice for luxury experiences, but it is practical, high-value, and easy to plan. It suits budget-conscious travellers with flexible itineraries. Registration is free, so join first and decide later whether to pursue the program more seriously.
