One-line comparison: Both paid routes buy SkyTeam Elite Plus. SAS EuroBonus status match Gold costs only €199 and can last nearly 24 months; Vietnam Airlines Platinum costs US$359 and lasts just 12 months. Unless your only source status is hotel elite status or your programme is outside SAS coverage, SAS is the better first choice for buying Elite Plus. Vietnam Airlines is mainly a fallback when you need broader source-programme coverage.

Vietnam Airlines’ paid Lotusmiles status match with StatusMatch has been running for a while (official page). This is not a traditional free challenge. It is a paid, application-based public match: members with qualifying elite status from selected airline or hotel programmes pay an application fee and may be matched to Lotusmiles Titanium, Gold, or Platinum status, valid for 12 months.

For residents of Canada and the United States, the value is not really Vietnam Airlines itself—Vietnam Airlines has only one North American route, as explained below. The appeal is that this is a way to buy SkyTeam elite status outright: Platinum maps to SkyTeam Elite Plus, while Gold and Titanium map to SkyTeam Elite. For North American travellers who hold Star Alliance or oneworld status but are otherwise “going bare” in SkyTeam, this is one of the lowest-barrier ways to fill that gap.

The promotion has no published fixed end date. Vietnam Airlines and StatusMatch both reserve the right to change or end it at any time.

What the offer includes

Applicants must first have a free Lotusmiles account. If you do not have one, you can register for free on the Vietnam Airlines website. You then submit proof of status from another programme, and may be asked to provide a passport, driver’s licence, or another government-issued document to verify your country of residence and identity. An application fee is required. The result is sent within 3 business days, and approved status should appear in the account within 5 business days.

Airline-status match fees (residents of Canada, the United States, and other eligible regions; fees in USD):

Match level SkyTeam tier Fee (USD)
Lotusmiles Titanium SkyTeam Elite $129
Lotusmiles Gold SkyTeam Elite $219
Lotusmiles Platinum SkyTeam Elite Plus $359

⚠️ Exception: Applications based on Alaska Airlines (Atmos Rewards) status cost slightly more: Titanium $159, Gold $239, and Platinum remains $359.

Hotel-status match fees (available for a limited time; fees in USD):

Match level SkyTeam tier Fee (USD)
Lotusmiles Titanium SkyTeam Elite $149
Lotusmiles Gold SkyTeam Elite $239
Lotusmiles Platinum — Not available

Other key rules:

  • Each person can match only once. Anyone who has previously received Lotusmiles status through a match cannot apply again.
  • The match is based on the status you hold when you apply. If your source programme is about to upgrade you, it may be worth waiting until the upgrade posts before applying.
  • Holders of qualifying top-tier status who are eligible for Platinum may choose to match to Gold instead and pay the Gold fee.
  • Matched status is digital status in the app; no physical card is issued.
  • To renew after 12 months, you must requalify under Lotusmiles’ normal earning requirements.
  • The terms warn that applications based on challenge status, temporary status, or status obtained through another match “chain” may be rejected. The review team expects source status to have been earned normally under the source programme’s rules.

Which status programmes are eligible?

Your source status must come from a non-SkyTeam programme. Status from Delta, Air France-KLM, Korean Air, China Airlines, Aeromexico, and other SkyTeam programmes cannot be used as a source. The list is broad, covering more than 40 airline programmes and 19 hotel programmes. The most relevant options for North American readers are below; use the official matching table for the complete list.

Canadian airlines:

Air Canada Aeroplan Elite 25K Elite 35K Elite 50K (choose one), Elite 75K, Super Elite
WestJet Rewards Silver Gold Platinum

Aeroplan 50K is a particularly useful sweet spot. It is normally Star Alliance Gold, but it can be used to choose between Gold and Platinum here—so paying $359 can get you SkyTeam Elite Plus.

Credit cards in selected countries (maximum match level: Titanium):

  • Eligible countries: Australia, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, and Malaysia. The official page lists Singapore twice; the table above follows the source wording.
  • Visa: Infinite, Signature, Rewards, and Platinum.
  • Mastercard: World and World Elite.
  • American Express: Platinum Credit & Charge Cards.
  • Match level: Lotusmiles Titanium only.
  • Application fee: US$199, paid with an eligible Travel Rewards Credit Card.

⚠️ Note: The official page also requires the card to be an airline, hotel, or travel co-branded card, or a card that earns points or miles transferable to an airline or hotel programme. The matching system determines eligibility.

What are these matched statuses worth to residents of Canada and the United States?

This is the key point. In short: Titanium and Gold have limited value; Platinum (Elite Plus) is the real target.

Platinum = SkyTeam Elite Plus, which provides the following across the SkyTeam network:

  • International itinerary lounge access: When flying on an international SkyTeam itinerary, you can use member-airline lounges and bring one guest. This includes Air France and KLM lounges in Europe, Korean Air and China Airlines lounges in Asia, and Delta Sky Clubs when the itinerary is international.
  • SkyPriority: Priority check-in, priority security screening at some airports, priority boarding, and priority baggage handling.
  • Extra checked baggage: Economy passengers can usually check one additional bag, subject to each airline’s rules.

These benefits are useful on routes North American residents actually fly: Delta’s US domestic, transatlantic, and transpacific network; Air France and KLM flights from Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver to Europe; Korean Air and China Airlines flights from Vancouver and Toronto to Asia; and Aeromexico’s US–Mexico routes. In other words, even if you never fly Vietnam Airlines, Platinum can still pay for itself on other SkyTeam carriers.

Two practical points to keep in mind:

  • A purely domestic Delta itinerary does not provide Sky Club access: Under SkyTeam rules, lounge access for a partner Elite Plus member is tied to an international itinerary. On a purely domestic Delta trip, SkyPriority and other ground benefits such as extra baggage still apply, but the lounge benefit does not. Delta’s own Medallion rules are different, so do not mix the two.
  • Titanium / Gold = SkyTeam Elite: The main benefits are extra baggage, priority check-in, and priority boarding. There is no alliance lounge access. Lotusmiles Gold does provide access to Vietnam Airlines’ business lounges when flying Vietnam Airlines. If you are buying this for lounges, aim for Platinum rather than stopping at Gold.

For context, Delta’s own Medallion Status Match Challenge is free, but it provides only 3 months of temporary status, and you must earn enough MQD within the challenge period to keep it. Vietnam Airlines is a paid 12-month match with no flying requirement. For someone with elite status in another alliance and several SkyTeam trips planned over the next year, the latter is more predictable.

A note on Vietnam Airlines’ only North American route

Vietnam Airlines has a surprisingly small presence in North America:

  • Its only North American route is San Francisco (SFO)–Ho Chi Minh City (SGN). It launched on November 28, 2021, as Vietnam Airlines’ first US route and remains the only nonstop route between the United States and Vietnam. The route is operated by A350 and 787 aircraft, runs several times per week, and takes about 15 hours and 40 minutes each way.
  • Vietnam Airlines has no flights to Canada. Canadians travelling to Vietnam usually connect through San Francisco, or make one stop in Seoul, Tokyo, Taipei, Hong Kong, or another hub.

That is also the right way to think about this status: you are not buying it because North American residents will regularly fly Vietnam Airlines—the opportunity is limited. You are using Vietnam Airlines’ programme as a way to buy SkyTeam-wide benefits. Of course, if you do happen to fly San Francisco–Ho Chi Minh City, the matched status works on that flight too, and Gold or higher can use Vietnam Airlines lounges.

First compare it with SAS’s paid match: Vietnam Airlines charges a premium

If you are considering paying for SkyTeam status, SAS EuroBonus offers another option: SAS EuroBonus’ paid status match. Both products ultimately provide SkyTeam status, but the price and validity period are quite different:

Target Vietnam Airlines SAS EuroBonus
SkyTeam Elite Plus Platinum: US$359, valid for 12 months Gold: €199 (about US$230), valid for the remainder of the current membership year plus 12 months, up to nearly 24 months
SkyTeam Elite Gold: US$219; Titanium: US$129 Silver: €89
Top-tier status Platinum is the highest tier Diamond: €349, with additional benefits such as a 30% discount on award tickets

The Gold tier makes the difference especially clear. Vietnam Airlines charges US$219 for Gold, which is only SkyTeam Elite and does not include alliance lounge access. SAS charges €199 for Gold and gives you Elite Plus directly. Using Aeroplan 50K as an example: €199 through SAS can get you Elite Plus, while the equivalent Vietnam Airlines route costs US$359—and the validity period is much shorter, 12 months versus up to nearly 24 months.

So, if the only question is which product is the better way to buy Elite Plus, SAS is clearly ahead right now. Vietnam Airlines’ remaining advantage is coverage: it accepts status from more than 40 airline programmes plus 19 hotel programmes as sources, while SAS only accepts airline status. If your only qualifying status is hotel elite status, or your status is not on SAS’s list, Vietnam Airlines is the side door with unique value.

Is it worth it? Who is it for?

It makes sense for:

  • Holders of Aeroplan 50K, 75K, or Super Elite, United 1K, American Executive Platinum, or another non-SkyTeam top-tier status who have Delta, Air France-KLM, Korean Air, China Airlines, or other SkyTeam travel planned in the next 12 months. Paying $359 for a year of Elite Plus can pay for itself through lounge access and extra baggage on one international trip.
  • People who only have hotel elite status, such as Marriott Platinum. Paying $239 for Gold gives you SkyTeam Elite baggage and priority benefits at a relatively low cost, and can be a way to test the waters.
  • “Status collectors” who have Star Alliance and oneworld status but are missing SkyTeam.

It is not a good fit for:

  • People who rarely fly SkyTeam. A status match you cannot use is worth nothing.
  • People buying it mainly for Delta’s US domestic lounges; see the limitation above.
  • Applicants whose source status expires in only a few months, or whose source status came from a challenge or another match. There is a risk of rejection, so weigh that before paying.

In short, this is not a new promotion so much as a side door that has stayed open. For North American residents, Vietnam Airlines’ paid status match is essentially US$129–359 for 12 months of SkyTeam status. The option for Aeroplan 50K holders to choose Platinum is the particularly attractive detail for Canadian travellers.
