【December 3, 2025 update】 A quiet, sharp devaluation. The old sweet spots are less sweet.
The Miles&Smiles sweet spot is domestic awards in large countries such as China, Canada, and the United States:
| Cabin / miles one way | Before the devaluation | After the early-2024 devaluation | After the late-2025 devaluation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Economy | 7500 | 10,000 | 15,000 Hawaii 22,500 |
| Business | 12500 | 15,000 | 22,500 Hawaii 40,000 |
| First | 20000 | 20,000 | 30,000 Hawaii 50,000 |
On domestic routes that are not Hawaii, the increase is 50%. Mainland U.S. to Hawaii rose even more.
There was a small warning: award search did not work over the weekend, probably while they updated the system. In the small group:
A separate post tracks large dumps of Turkish Airlines award seats back to China:
Large award dump: Turkish Airlines business class back to China
The airline
Turkish Airlines is Turkey’s flag carrier. The English name is Turkish Airlines, and the IATA code is TK.
Turkish Airlines is a Star Alliance member, with a large network in Europe, Asia, and the Americas, and more nonstop destinations than any other airline. Its hubs are Istanbul’s two airports, IST and SAW, plus the capital airport in Ankara, ESB.
【May 21, 2025 update】 Turkey and China signed a memorandum to add more nonstop flights. Turkish Airlines will add Chengdu, Xi’an, and Ürümqi.
That means more Canada–Istanbul–China routings.

The mileage program
Turkish Airlines’ frequent-flyer program is Miles&Smiles. A few quirks are worth knowing.
-
extending miles: miles expire after three years. You can pay to extend them another three years at US$20 per 1,000 miles
-
transferring miles: you can move miles to a relative or friend’s account at US$20 per 1,000 miles
-
activating miles: miles that expired in the past year can be revived at US$20 per 1,000 miles
-
converting miles: cobranded-card holders (U.S., Turkey, Azerbaijan, Jordan) can convert spend miles into Status Miles at 5:1, up to 40,000 Status Miles a year this way
-
Family account: only for members above the base Classic card, and you need to mail certified marriage documents
If a member dies, Turkish Airlines requires that member’s death certificate, proof of inheritance, and a notarized waiver (showing the other heirs give up their rights) before the deceased member’s miles can move to one heir’s Miles&Smiles account. Transferred miles keep the date they were first earned.
- Retroactive credit is valid for 12 months on Turkish Airlines-operated flights. Partner airlines may differ.
3.1 Earning miles
As with other programs, you mainly earn by flying, spending on a cobranded card, transferring points, and a few smaller partners.
3.1.1 Flights
You can earn on Turkish Airlines, Star Alliance members, and non-alliance partners including Azul Brazilian Airlines, IndiGo, Olympic Air, and GOL.

*Applicable Mile amount for direct flights with Star Alliance member airlines in the same country.
Terms and conditions
Effective August 31, 2024, the frequent flyer program partnership between Turkish Airlines and Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) will be terminated. As of this date, earning or redeeming Miles and enjoying status privileges on SAS flights will no longer be possible. For further information, you can contact customer service.
Values may vary depending on exchange rates, taxes may be introduced or repealed, amounts may be subject to seasonal fluctuations, and new destinations may be added to regions.
Taxes may arise from flight cabin differences.
The departure point will be taken as a basis for taxes, and separate taxes may be charged for some arrival points.
Turkish Airlines reserves the right to limit or seasonally suspend the use of award tickets.
The Miles of an award ticket is expressed for one-way tickets, award tickets can also be issued as round-trip tickets.
Star Alliance award tickets can also be issued as round-trip tickets.
For award regions in the scope of Turkish Airlines and Star Alliance flights, please see the award regions table.
3.2.2 Award sweet spots ❗️
After the early-2024 devaluation, Miles&Smiles is less of a hidden gem, but a few sweet spots remain.
Domestic awards in the same country, for example:
| Cabin / miles one way | Before the devaluation | After the devaluation |
|---|---|---|
| Economy | 7500 | 10000 |
| Business | 12500 | 15000 |
| First | 20000 | 20000 |
In large countries such as Canada, the United States, and China, that award is still a strong deal even after the devaluation:
- US$225 for Vancouver–Toronto, Montreal, or Quebec City in business
- US$225 for Shanghai, Beijing, or Shenzhen in business
Air Canada and Air China award availability in Miles&Smiles is very good right now.
I remember United used to show a lot of space too, including East Coast–Hawaii at this price. I tried again today and UA space was thin, so I am not using those examples.
- Vancouver – Montreal business
- Toronto – Vancouver business
- Vancouver – Halifax economy
- Beijing – Shanghai business
- Shenzhen – Beijing business
- Guangzhou – Ürümqi economy
