Benefits & Insurance
- Free First Checked Bag
The primary cardmember, supplementary cardmembers, and up to 8 companions on the same booking can receive a free first checked bag on eligible Air Canada flights. A supplementary cardmember must link their own Aeroplan number to the card. The benefit applies only to eligible travel operated by Air Canada, Air Canada Rouge, or Air Canada Express. You cannot claim a duplicate benefit or a refund when another benefit already makes the first bag free.
- Aeroplan Status Qualifying Credits (SQC)
The primary cardmember receives 1,000 SQC for every $20,000 in eligible net purchases, up to 25,000 SQC per calendar year. Returns, cash advances, Global Money Transfers, balance transfers, convenience cheques, fees, interest, and payments do not count. Supplementary-card spending can count toward the primary account, but supplementary cardmembers do not receive SQC separately through this benefit.
- Aeroplan Points Will Not Expire
Aeroplan points do not expire for lack of activity as long as the primary cardmember continues to hold this CIBC Aeroplan card. Both the card account and the Aeroplan account must remain in good standing under their respective terms.
- Air Canada Award Seats and Redemption Options
Aeroplan says that an Air Canada seat available for purchase with cash can also be redeemed with Aeroplan points, subject to actual inventory, route, taxes, and award rules. You can pay for an Air Canada flight reward with points, cash, or a combination. Air Canada flight rewards do not have an airline cash surcharge, although taxes and third-party fees may still apply.
- Aeroplan Preferred Pricing and Family Sharing
Cardmembers may receive Aeroplan Preferred Pricing on flight rewards and can pool points with household members under Aeroplan Family Sharing. The points price depends on the date, route, cabin, and Aeroplan’s pricing and programme terms.
- Get a Fourth Night Free on Aeroplan Hotel Redemptions
When you redeem Aeroplan points for 4 consecutive nights at the same participating hotel under one reservation, you can skip the points cost of one night based on the average points cost. Eight consecutive nights can qualify for two free nights under the same rules. The current Air Canada page says the offer ends December 31, 2026 unless extended. Points-only bookings are required; cash and points-plus-cash bookings do not qualify. View Air Canada’s official information🔗

Travel Insurance
Official insurance certificate 🔗
- Out-of-Province Emergency Travel Medical Insurance
Canadian residents travelling outside their province of residence who have provincial or territorial health coverage can receive up to $5,000,000 per insured person per trip for eligible emergency medical care. The trip does not have to be paid with the card. Coverage is for up to 15 days for travellers aged 64 or under and up to 3 days for travellers aged 65 or older. Contact Global Excel before treatment, or as soon as medically possible. Unstable pre-existing medical conditions, non-emergency treatment, and travel undertaken to obtain treatment may be excluded. Claims must be submitted within 90 days after the service.
- Trip Cancellation Insurance
Trip cancellation coverage can apply when a trip is cancelled before departure for a covered reason defined in the certificate, and prepaid, non-refundable, non-transferable travel arrangements were paid with the card or redeemed with the card’s reward points. Coverage is up to $1,500 per insured person and $5,000 for all insured persons combined. Known or foreseeable causes, unstable pre-existing medical conditions, and other certificate exclusions apply.
- Trip Interruption and Return-Delay Insurance
If a trip is interrupted or delayed after it starts for a covered reason, any portion of the qualifying travel costs paid with the card or redeemed with the card’s reward points can qualify for reimbursement of unused prepaid arrangements and reasonable additional expenses. Coverage is up to $2,000 per insured person. Return-transport delays have separate daily and combined sub-limits. Contact the insurer on the day the event occurs or the next business day, and keep the required proof.
- Car Rental Collision/Loss Damage Insurance
Canadian residents must charge the full rental cost, including taxes, to the card and decline the rental company’s CDW/LDW. Qualifying vehicles must have an MSRP of no more than $85,000, and the maximum continuous rental is 48 days. Third-party liability and personal injury are not covered. Contact the insurer within 48 hours of the accident or loss and submit the required documents within the certificate’s deadlines.
- Common Carrier Accident Insurance
When at least 75% of the fare including taxes is charged to the card, coverage can apply while travelling as a passenger on, boarding, or leaving an eligible common carrier, or while travelling directly to or from the airport, station, or terminal. Coverage is up to $500,000 per insured person per accident. Sickness, intentional self-harm, criminal acts, alcohol or drug impairment, and war or riot-related events are excluded.
- Flight Delay Insurance
If an eligible scheduled flight is delayed more than 4 hours for a covered reason and the fare was paid with the card or the card’s reward points, reasonable living, transportation, and entertainment expenses can be reimbursed. The limit is $500 for all insured persons combined, with separate sub-limits for ground transportation and entertainment. Keep the airline’s delay confirmation and receipts.
- Delayed Checked Baggage Insurance
When checked baggage remains in the airline’s custody and is unavoidably delayed for more than 6 hours, and the fare was paid with the card or the card’s reward points, necessary clothing and toiletries bought during the delay can qualify. Coverage is up to $500 per insured person and $1,000 for all insured persons combined. Purchases must be made within 4 days after the delay.
- Lost or Stolen Baggage Insurance
Carry-on or checked baggage lost, stolen, or damaged while in a common carrier’s custody can qualify when the fare meets the payment requirement. Claims are based on the lesser of actual replacement cost and actual cash value. Coverage is up to $500 per insured person and $1,000 combined. Cash, documents, some valuables, and baggage lost while commuting are excluded.
- Hotel Burglary Insurance
When any portion of the accommodation cost is paid with the card or the card’s reward points, personal items lost or damaged in a burglary of a commercial accommodation room can qualify. Coverage is up to $2,500 for all insured persons combined per burglary occurrence. Report the incident to the police promptly and submit written proof within 30 days of the loss.
Purchase Protection
- Purchase Security Insurance
When a new personal item is bought and at least part of the price is charged to the card, loss, theft, or accidental damage within 90 days can qualify for coverage under the certificate. The benefit is limited to the lesser of the repair cost, actual cash value, or the amount charged to the card. Business or commercial purchases, used or refurbished items, normal wear, mysterious disappearance, and other certificate exclusions generally are not covered.
- Extended Protection Insurance
When at least part of the purchase price is charged to the card and the original manufacturer’s warranty is honoured in Canada or the United States, the warranty can be extended by up to one additional year. A manufacturer’s warranty longer than 5 years may require registration during the first year. Dealer warranties, improper installation, and repairs not covered by the original warranty are excluded, and the certificate includes aggregate limits and claim deadlines.
- Mobile Device Insurance
When buying a phone, you must charge the full price—or the down payment and subsequent device-plan bills as required by the certificate—to the card. The device must also be activated with a Canadian wireless carrier. Loss, theft, or accidental damage is covered up to $1,000 per insured person per occurrence, after a 10% deductible and depreciation. Depreciation is generally 2% of the purchase price for each month. After theft, suspend service within 48 hours and report it to police within 7 days; contact the insurer before repairing or replacing the device.
