Earning Aeroplan Points

The 2x and 1.5x bonus rates together apply only to the first $80,000 of net annual card purchases on the account, shared across all cardholders and merchant categories. After the cap, net card purchases earn 1x. The allowance resets the day after the December statement is printed. Benefits & Insurance
- Free First Checked Bag
The primary cardmember, supplementary cardmembers, and up to 8 companions on the same booking can each receive a free first checked bag on eligible Air Canada travel, for a maximum of 9 travellers. The bag limit is 23 kg / 50 lb per person. The itinerary must start on a qualifying Air Canada flight operated by Air Canada, Air Canada Rouge, or Air Canada Express. If the first bag is already free, this benefit does not provide a second benefit or a refund.
- Maple Leaf Lounge Guest Pass
For every $10,000 of eligible net account-year spending, the primary cardmember can receive 1 Guest Pass, up to 4 passes per account year. Each pass is valid for 12 months after it is issued and can be used by the primary cardmember, a supplementary cardmember, or a guest accompanying one of them. The traveller needs a same-day eligible departing Air Canada ticket from a Maple Leaf Lounge in Canada or the United States. International-departure-zone lounges, Air Canada Signature Suite, and third-party lounges are excluded, and entry remains subject to capacity.

- Supplementary Cardmember Travel Benefits
After a supplementary cardmember links their own Aeroplan number to the card, they can use eligible Air Canada travel benefits without the primary cardmember travelling with them. The name on the booking must match the Aeroplan account, and linking can take up to 72 hours.
- Aeroplan Status Qualifying Credits (SQC)
The primary cardmember receives 1,000 SQC for every $20,000 in eligible net spending, up to 25,000 SQC per Aeroplan member per calendar year across all Aeroplan cards. Supplementary-card spending can count toward the primary account’s threshold, but supplementary cardmembers cannot receive SQC through this benefit on their own.
- 100% Air Canada Seat Availability
If an Air Canada seat is available to buy with cash, Aeroplan also makes it available for points redemption, subject to award inventory and programme terms. The CIBC page describes more than 200 Air Canada destinations and more than 1,300 destinations served by partner airlines.
- Aeroplan Preferred Pricing
The primary cardmember may be able to book flight rewards with fewer Aeroplan points. The points required depend on the route, date, cabin, and Aeroplan’s pricing rules; not every flight is guaranteed to receive a discount.
- No Cash Surcharges on Air Canada Flight Rewards
Air Canada does not add a cash surcharge when you redeem Aeroplan points for its flights. Taxes, airport charges, and other third-party fees may still apply, and payment options follow Aeroplan’s rules.
- Points Plus Cash
You can combine points and cash when booking an Aeroplan flight reward. Where permitted, you can also use points for taxes, fees, and carrier surcharges; redemption ratios and restrictions can change.
- Get a Fourth Night Free on Aeroplan Hotel Redemptions
When you redeem Aeroplan points for 4 consecutive nights at the same participating hotel under one reservation, you can skip the points cost of one night based on the average points cost. Eight consecutive nights can qualify for two free nights under the same rules. The current Air Canada page says the offer ends December 31, 2026 unless extended. Cash and points-plus-cash bookings do not qualify. Air Canada’s official information🔗
- Avis Preferred Plus
Cardmembers can receive Avis Preferred Plus benefits, including a one-class upgrade, expedited service, a dedicated phone line, and designated parking and pickup benefits at some locations. Upgrades depend on availability, location, and Avis’s terms.

Eligible primary cardmembers who buy a monthly Disney+ subscription priced at $8.99 or more directly from Disney+ can receive a $4.50 statement credit each month for up to 6 consecutive months. - Announced Changes from January 12, 2027
CIBC has announced that the primary annual fee will rise from $180 to $200 and supplementary cards will rise from $50 to $55. The card will also add a 15% reduction in the Aeroplan points required for the base fare of eligible Air Canada flight rewards, two $25 Air Canada Flight Benefits per year, removal of the fourth-night hotel benefit’s expiry date, and a benefit that waives one day’s average points cost for every 4 rental days. These are future changes; after they take effect, use them under the new Benefits Guide and Aeroplan terms. View CIBC’s change notice🔗
Travel Insurance
Official insurance certificate 🔗
- Trip Cancellation Insurance
Trip cancellation coverage can apply when a trip is cancelled before departure for a covered reason defined in the certificate, and prepaid, non-refundable, non-transferable travel arrangements were paid with the card or redeemed with the card’s reward points. Coverage is up to $1,000 per insured person and $5,000 for all insured persons combined. The trip must be taken by a Canadian resident outside their home province. Known or foreseeable causes, unstable pre-existing medical conditions, and other certificate exclusions apply. Contact Global Excel on the day the covered reason occurs or the next business day.
- Trip Interruption Insurance
If a trip is interrupted after it starts for a covered reason, any portion of the prepaid travel arrangements paid with the card or redeemed with the card’s reward points can qualify for reimbursement of unused prepaid arrangements and eligible additional transportation costs. Coverage is up to $2,000 per insured person per trip. The coverage period starts on departure; certain return delays, medical unfitness, or hospitalisation can extend it automatically, but never beyond 365 days after departure.
- Trip Delay Insurance
If a covered reason delays the trip beyond its scheduled return date, and any portion of the prepaid travel arrangements was paid with the card or redeemed with the card’s reward points, eligible costs can be reimbursed up to $2,000 per insured person under the trip-interruption/delay limit. Covered reasons include certain public-transport cancellations or delays, weather, mechanical breakdowns, and government travel warnings listed in the certificate. Contact Global Excel on the day the covered reason occurs or the next business day. Stable-condition and other certificate limits apply.
- Car Rental Collision/Loss Damage Insurance
Canadian residents must charge the full rental cost, including taxes, to the card and decline the rental company’s CDW/LDW. If points pay part of the rental, the remaining amount must be charged to the card. The vehicle’s manufacturer’s suggested retail price must be no more than $85,000, and the maximum rental period is 48 consecutive days. Coverage is limited to actual cash value and eligible loss-of-use charges, with no deductible. Third-party liability, personal injury, and property other than the rental vehicle are excluded. Report the accident or loss within 48 hours, submit initial documents within 45 days, and provide all documents within 90 days.
- Common Carrier Accident Insurance
When at least 75% of the fare including taxes is charged to the card, coverage can apply while boarding, travelling on, or leaving a plane, train, bus, ferry, or another common carrier, as well as while travelling directly to or from the terminal. Coverage for accidental death or dismemberment is up to $500,000 per insured person, and the loss must occur within 365 days of the accident. The primary cardmember’s spouse and dependent children are covered; an authorized user who is not the spouse or a dependent child is not covered under this certificate. Sickness, intentional self-harm, criminal acts, alcohol or drug impairment, and war or riot-related events are excluded. Notify the insurer as soon as possible, and where possible in writing within 90 days of the loss.
- Flight Delay Insurance
If an eligible scheduled flight is delayed more than 4 hours for a covered reason, and at least 75% of the fare was paid with the card or card reward points, reasonable meals, accommodation, transportation, and entertainment expenses can be reimbursed. The maximum is $500 for all insured persons combined, with $100 combined sub-limits for ground transportation and entertainment. Keep the airline’s delay confirmation and receipts, and notify the insurer as soon as possible, preferably in writing within 90 days.
- Delay of Checked Baggage Insurance
When checked baggage remains in the airline’s custody and is unavoidably delayed for more than 6 hours, and at least 75% of the fare was paid with the card or card reward points, necessary clothing and toiletries bought during the delay can qualify. Coverage is up to $500 per insured person and $1,000 for all insured persons combined. Purchases must be made within 4 days after the delay. You need the baggage tag, the airline’s confirmation, receipts, and proof of payment.
- Lost, Stolen, or Damaged Baggage Insurance
Carry-on or checked baggage lost, stolen, or damaged while in a common carrier’s custody can qualify when the fare meets the payment requirement. Claims are based on the actual replacement cost or actual cash value, subject to the certificate. Coverage is up to $500 per insured person and $1,000 combined. Animals, cash, documents, eyewear, cameras, some sporting equipment, and baggage lost while commuting are excluded. First claim against the carrier and keep its documents.
Purchase Protection
- Purchase Security Insurance
When a Canadian resident buys a new personal item or gift and charges at least part of the price to the card, loss, theft, or accidental damage within 90 days can qualify for coverage without registration. The benefit is limited to the lesser of the repair cost, actual cash value, or the amount charged to the card. The aggregate limit is $60,000 per cardholder across all CIBC cards. Normal wear, used or refurbished items, mysterious disappearance, services, perishables, vehicles, cash, and other certificate exclusions are not covered. Give notice within 45 days and submit the Loss Report within 90 days; repairs require prior approval.
- Extended Protection Insurance
When at least part of the purchase price is charged to the card and the original manufacturer’s warranty is honoured in Canada or the United States, the warranty can automatically be extended by up to one additional year. Registration is usually not required, but an item with a manufacturer’s warranty longer than 5 years must be registered during the first year. This benefit shares the $60,000 aggregate limit per cardholder across all CIBC cards. Dealer, assembler, or service warranties, improper installation, alterations, and repairs not covered by the original manufacturer’s warranty are excluded. The same 45-day notice and 90-day Loss Report deadlines apply, along with prior approval for repairs.
