[August 18, 2026 update] Chexy announced a major change: starting October 22, 2026, rent, condo fees, property tax, and income tax paid through Scotia Momentum Visa Infinite+ will no longer count as 4% recurring-bill purchases. They will earn only 1% cash back as regular purchases.
The categories that will continue to earn 4% include utilities, car leases, insurance, childcare and education, phone bills, internet, and cable.
Now that the Scotia Momentum Visa Infinite strategy is no longer as attractive, which cards are worth considering with Chexy? See Section 2 below.
[July 25, 2026 update] Chexy launched the First Class sweepstakes. You can find it in the app. Users can earn entries through payments, referrals, and social-media posts. Prizes include major trips and cash rewards, and entries reset after each round.

For most people living in Canada, the largest unavoidable monthly expenses are rent or a mortgage, followed by tuition, property taxes, utilities, and telecommunications bills.
For years, these large payments usually had to be made by Interac e-Transfer, pre-authorized debit (PAD), or cheque. Watching thousands of dollars leave your account every month without earning credit-card points or cash back is frustrating. Chexy, a Toronto-based fintech company, changes that by allowing Canadians to put these expenses on a credit card. It also offers a mortgage program designed for Canadian homeowners to earn Aeroplan points.

1. What is Chexy? Two core businesses
Chexy is a Canadian digital payments and financial-services platform that helps residents turn large, unavoidable expenses into credit-card rewards and credit-building opportunities. Its two main businesses are:
- Chexy Rent & Bills: Tenants can use Canadian- or internationally issued Visa, Mastercard, or American Express cards to pay rent and more than 13,000 types of bills, including property taxes, tuition, and utilities. The most useful part is that the landlord does not need to create a Chexy account. The landlord can continue receiving a regular Interac e-Transfer.
Here are examples of expenses that can be paid through Chexy:
| Category | Included |
|---|---|
| Rent | Home, apartment, student residence |
| Household expenses | Condo or strata fees, parking, cleaning |
| Utilities | Electricity, water, waste management |
| Insurance | Home, car, pet |
| Car and transportation | Car lease |
| Childcare and education | Daycare, tuition, babysitter, child support |
| Property taxes | Municipal property taxes |
| Telecommunications | Phone bill, internet, cable |
| Wellness | Gym, club, and health memberships |
Keep in mind that recurring bills paid on a regular schedule can be sent through Interac e-Transfer, PAD, or bill pay. One-time payments can only use the bill-pay method.
- Chexy Mortgage: Chexy works with Aeroplan and offers the program to homeowners across Canada. Homeowners connect the bank account used for their mortgage payments and earn Aeroplan points at 1 point per $1, along with status-qualifying credits (SQC).
2. Fees and credit-card strategies
Chexy’s credit-card processing fees are straightforward and competitive with similar services:
- Canadian Visa, Mastercard, and American Express cards: standard fee of 1.75%
- International cards: 2.5%
- Visa or Mastercard debit cards: free, with 0% processing fee
2.1 Referral-status fee discounts
Inviting friends to use Chexy can unlock lower fees:
- Starter (one or more referrals): $15 cash reward
- Pink (three or more referrals): rent-processing fee falls to 1.5% (0.25 percentage-point reduction)
- Gold (five or more referrals): rent-processing fee falls to 1.0% (0.75 percentage-point reduction)
- Elite (10 or more referrals): rent-processing fee falls to just 0.5% (1.25 percentage-point reduction)
2.2 Credit-card strategies that can produce a positive return
Is it worth paying a 1.75% processing fee? It depends on your goal.
- Some cards classify Chexy as a recurring bill or pre-authorized payment, which can trigger 3%–4% cash-back categories.
- Large Chexy payments can help you complete a new-card welcome-bonus spending requirement.
Cards that may be worth considering include:
Scotia Momentum Visa Infinite, which used to earn 4% as a recurring payment- TD Cash Back Visa Infinite, which earns 3% in the recurring-payment category
- Amex SimplyCash Preferred, which earns 2% cash back
- Amex Aeroplan Reserve, which earns 1.25x Aeroplan points
- TD Aeroplan VIP, which earns 1.25x Aeroplan points
Always check the current card terms and the exact bill category before relying on a strategy. The Scotia Momentum rules change on October 22, 2026.
3. Core feature: paying rent by credit card
Many tenants worry that their landlord accepts only e-Transfer and will not set up credit-card payments. That is exactly where Chexy is most useful: the landlord does not need to register or do anything differently.
- Step 1: Three or four days before rent is due, Chexy charges the rent amount and processing fee to your linked credit card.
- Step 2: On the scheduled due date, Chexy sends the full rent amount to the landlord by standard Interac e-Transfer, Bill Pay, or PAD in your name.
- Step 3: The landlord receives and deposits the rent just as they would with your usual e-Transfer. You receive the card rewards and an official payment record.
4. Core feature: earning Aeroplan points on a mortgage
Chexy combines a bank-account debit or PAD with its official Aeroplan partnership.
- No credit card required: Chexy debits your existing chequing account on schedule for the mortgage payment.
- Works with major lenders: It supports Canada’s major banks, including RBC, TD, BMO, CIBC, and Scotiabank, as well as credit unions and private lenders. You do not need to refinance or change your mortgage rate or contract.
- Base rewards: Earn 1 Aeroplan point per $1 of mortgage payment. A $3,000 monthly payment would produce 36,000 Aeroplan points per year.
- Status-qualifying credits: For every five Aeroplan points earned, receive one SQC, up to 25,000 SQC per year, helping you pursue Aeroplan elite status.
- Service fee: Each mortgage payment carries a 1.75% service fee. After the initial setup and Aeroplan linking, you may also receive up to 7,000 welcome bonus points.
In simple terms, you are paying a 1.75% fee in exchange for one Aeroplan point and 0.2 SQC per dollar.
5. Quick setup guide
- Create an account: Register on the Chexy website and choose whether you want to pay rent, a mortgage, or bills.
- Enter your lease or mortgage details: Upload your lease agreement or enter your mortgage-payment information, then set the payment date and amount.
- Link a payment method:
- For rent, link the credit card you want to use; Scotia Momentum Visa Infinite or a cash-back card was previously a common choice.
- For a mortgage, link your personal chequing account and enter your Aeroplan number.
- Enter the landlord or payee’s e-Transfer email: Confirm the details and submit. Chexy will then charge and send the payment automatically each month.
6. Bottom line
Chexy fills one of the biggest gaps in Canada’s credit-card ecosystem by turning housing expenses—often 30%–50% of a person’s income—into expenses that can earn rewards.
The calculation must be done carefully. Compare the processing fee with the card reward, welcome-bonus value, Chexy cash back, annual caps, and the current merchant-category rules. A strategy that worked before may stop working after an issuer changes its terms.
