What Is Blue Rewards?
Blue Rewards is BMO’s loyalty program. It launched on June 2, 2026 and fully replaced AIR MILES, which had run for more than twenty years. The new program is built around one currency, Blue Points. The old AIR MILES Cash and Dream balances now sit in a single account, so earning and redeeming are more straightforward. Any Canadian resident can join for free. You do not have to be a BMO customer to register and start earning, but BMO customers can unlock higher earn rates through dedicated credit cards and chequing accounts.
The point value is relatively fixed. At participating stores, or when you redeem an eGift Card, 1,500 Blue Points equal $10 CAD, or about 0.67 cents per point. Travel, merchandise, and other experience redemptions can move a little, but the overall return stays close to old AIR MILES. The redemption rate itself is not exciting. The improvement is how many places you can earn, and how fast the points come in.
You can manage the account on the Blue Rewards website, the Blue Rewards app, or the BMO app. You can check your balance, scan receipts, claim offers, and jump to the travel booking site. The design is built around everyday spending: useful if you want points to offset daily costs, and useful if you want to put them toward flights and hotels.
Blue Points can be gifted to other members, and accounts in the same household can be combined. Combining household accounts is currently free. Gifting or transferring points to another account generally costs $0.15 plus tax per 16 points.
⚠️ Blue Rewards and BMO’s existing BMO Rewards program are completely separate. Do not mix them up.
How to Earn Blue Rewards Points
There are many ways to earn Blue Points, and they really do cover day-to-day spending. The basic idea is to stack everyday purchases, partner shopping, and BMO products so one purchase can earn more than once.
2.1 Credit-card spending and welcome offers
BMO has four credit cards that earn Blue Rewards points: two personal cards and two business cards.
Besides the welcome offers, their everyday earn rates are:
| Card | Base rate | Everyday bonus categories | Top partner and travel earn (Blue Rewards Partners) |
|---|---|---|---|
| BMO Blue Rewards Mastercard (no-fee personal card) |
0.5 points / $1 | 1 point / $1 (grocery, gas, EV charging, warehouse clubs, and liquor; up to $500 net spend per category per statement cycle, then 0.5x) |
5 points / $1 (participating Blue Rewards Partners and Blue Rewards Travel; up to $500 combined net spend per statement cycle, then 0.5x) |
| BMO Blue Rewards World Elite Mastercard (premium personal card) |
1 point / $1 | 2 points / $1 (grocery, gas, EV charging, warehouse clubs, and liquor; up to $500 net spend per category per statement cycle, then 1x) |
10 points / $1 (participating Blue Rewards Partners and Blue Rewards Travel; up to $1,000 combined net spend per statement cycle, then 1x) |
| BMO Blue Rewards Business Mastercard (no-fee business card) |
1 point / $1 | 2 points / $1 (Canadian gas and EV charging; up to $1,000 combined net spend per statement cycle, then 1x) |
10 points / $1 (participating partners and Blue Rewards Travel; up to $15,000 combined net spend per calendar year, then 1x) |
| BMO Blue Rewards World Elite Business Mastercard (premium business card) |
1.25 points / $1 | 2.5 points / $1 (Canadian gas and EV charging; up to $1,000 combined net spend per statement cycle, then 1.25x) |
12.5 points / $1 (participating partners and Blue Rewards Travel; up to $25,000 combined net spend per calendar year, then 1.25x) |
2.2 Partner-network spending
Show your physical or in-app Blue Rewards Member Card when you shop at participating partners. Earn rates are not the same everywhere. Some partners award points on spend. Others add extra bonus points through time-limited offers.

2.3 Shop online through Blue Rewards Shops
Blue Rewards also has its own shopping portal, Blue Rewards Shops. It works a lot like Aeroplan eStore or Rakuten. Sign in to Blue Rewards Shops, then click through to Apple, Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, Sephora, lululemon, Samsung, eBay, Dyson, and other partners. You earn a layer of Blue Points on top of whatever the credit card itself pays.
Each merchant has its own earn rate, and 2x, 5x, or 7x promos show up often. It is worth checking Blue Rewards Shops before you buy electronics, clothing, or other large online orders.
2.4 Card Offers (in-store earn)
Add a BMO Blue Rewards credit card (the two personal cards and two business cards), a Blue Rewards chequing debit card, or even a non-BMO Mastercard to your Blue Rewards account. You can then earn Blue Rewards points on in-store purchases at participating merchants.
⚠️ Some merchants require you to register for the offer first. Others just need you to pay with the linked card.
2.5 Book travel on Blue Rewards Travel
You can also earn points by booking flights, hotels, and rental cars through Blue Rewards Travel powered by Expedia.
For a regular Blue Rewards member paying with a credit card, the current base rule is 16 points per $15 spent. If the same booking combines two of Flight, Hotel, or Car Rental, it can earn 48 points per $15.
2.6 Hold a BMO chequing account
The Blue Rewards Chequing Account earns 1 point per $2 spent at the base rate, and 2x points in eligible grocery, gas, EV charging, and wholesale-club categories.
If the account keeps the required balance of at least $4,000, you can earn 500 bonus points each month. Holding a BMO Blue Rewards World Elite Mastercard at the same time can add another 500 bonus points each month.
2.7 Scan receipts
The Blue Rewards app also has Blue Receipts. Some brands run offers on specific products. Buy those items at an eligible grocery store in Canada, then scan a clear receipt in the app within the stated window, and you may receive extra bonus points.
The grocery store itself does not have to be a Blue Rewards Partner, which opens up more everyday grocery earning.
How to Use Blue Rewards Points
Redemption is flexible too. The idea is that points can cover part or all of a cost. You do not have to redeem a whole purchase in one shot. The most direct and stable value is an in-store statement-style offset or an eGift Card: 1,500 points equal $10 CAD. eGift Cards cover Amazon, Apple, Dyson, and hundreds of other brands. In-store offsets cover partners such as Pharmasave. There is a combined daily cap of $750, or about 112,500 points. That is the easiest way to lock in value and offset everyday spending.
For frequent travellers, Blue Rewards Travel is the portal to watch. It is powered by Expedia and has a wide inventory of flights, hotels, and rental cars. You can put any number of points toward part or all of a trip, including taxes. Cruises and some pay-at-property charges are the usual exclusions. There is no minimum: you can start with 1 point, and mix in cash if you do not have enough points. The practical value is about 0.63–0.67 cents per point. That is a little below the fixed store/gift-card rate, but you get real travel flexibility. You do not have to spend extra to round up a redemption, and the points are not locked into one airline or hotel program.
| Redemption | Value per 1,500 points | Flexibility | Can cover travel taxes? |
|---|---|---|---|
| In-store partner offset | $10 (0.67 cpp) | Very high (scan and apply on everyday purchases) | Not applicable |
| eGift Cards | $10 (0.67 cpp) | High (400+ everyday brands) | Not applicable |
| Blue Rewards Travel | About $10 (Expedia dynamic pricing) | Very high (no minimum; mix points and cash) | Yes (airfare and hotel taxes) |
Takeaway
Blue Rewards is strongest when it connects everyday spending to travel redemptions. Unlike programs that lean on premium spend or one airline or hotel, it gives a clear bonus on groceries, gas, wholesale clubs, and EV charging—costs most people already have. The partner network then extends earning to pharmacies, pet stores, building supplies, restaurants, and even delivery platforms. Stacking a credit card with the member card lets the same purchase earn card points and extra partner points. That is useful if you like to squeeze more value out of spending you were going to do anyway.
The point of the game is extra value on spending you already have, not extra spending for points. Keep that in mind, and Blue Rewards can actually help with travel.
