BMO Blue Rewards Mastercard

This card earns rewards through the Blue Rewards program. AIR MILES has been renamed Blue Rewards. BMO currently lists 1,500 Blue Points as $10 toward in-store purchases or an eGift Card. Travel and other redemption channels have different values and rules, so do not treat that as a single fixed valuation.

Everyday spending

5x: Spending at participating Blue Rewards Partners, including travel booked through Blue Rewards Travel (powered by Expedia). Combined net partner spend of up to $500 per statement cycle earns 5x; after that, only the 0.5x base rate applies. BMO can change the partner list at any time.

1x: Spending in Canada at grocery stores, gas stations, EV charging, wholesale clubs, and liquor merchants that Mastercard codes correctly. Each category earns 1x on up to $500 in net purchases per statement cycle; after that category cap, only 0.5x applies. BMO will not credit bonus points if the merchant category code does not match.

0.5x: Other eligible purchases. Cash advances, cash-like transactions, interest, fees, refunds, and account adjustments do not earn points. Points are rounded down and may post within 90 days after the statement cycle ends. If you also show a Blue Rewards Member Card at a participating partner, the member-card points can accumulate separately from the card points.

Benefits and insurance

  • Free additional cards

The website says you can add additional cardholders at no fee, and their spending can also earn Blue Points. The primary cardholder still has to manage how those cards are used and remains responsible for the account.

  • Partner offers

BMO’s page lists Cirque du Soleil, Instacart+, and other partner offers. Specific benefits may require enrolment and can have merchant, timing, frequency, and location limits. The offers change, and they should not be mixed up with the card’s fixed earn rates.

  • Car rental savings

Book through the BMO Car Rental Booking tool and you can save up to 20% on the base rate at National and Alamo, and up to 5% on the base rate at Enterprise. The discount does not include taxes, surcharges, fuel, one-way fees, or optional coverage. You must book at least 24 hours before pickup, and vehicle availability, age, and other rental terms still apply.

  • BMO PaySmart™ instalment plan

Eligible purchases can be converted into monthly instalments. BMO discloses the applicable fee when you set up the plan. This is not free insurance or a fixed perk. Availability, term length, and fees follow the actual offer in the account.

Purchase insurance

  • Purchase Protection

The primary or additional cardholder must charge the full purchase price of a personal item or gift to this account. Items redeemed with Mastercard reward points can also be covered, but the applicable taxes must be charged to the account. Business-use goods are not covered. For most eligible items, theft or damage worldwide within 90 days of purchase can be repaired, replaced, or reimbursed at the purchase price, at the insurer’s discretion. Purchase protection and extended warranty share a lifetime maximum of $60,000 per account, and this is supplementary coverage after other insurance, compensation, or warranties. Cash, tickets, animals, consumables/perishables, undelivered online purchases, used or refurbished goods, motor vehicles, and business items are not covered. Theft from a vehicle or residence with no visible forced entry is also excluded. Contact the Operations Centre immediately after you learn of an incident, then give written notice within 30 days and proof of claim within 90 days. If you cannot meet those timelines, submit the materials as soon as you can, and no later than one year after the incident.

  • Extended Warranty

The primary or additional cardholder must charge the full purchase price of a personal item or gift to this account, and the original manufacturer’s warranty must be valid in Canada. The same tax-charging rule applies to items redeemed with Mastercard reward points. Business-use goods are not covered. Coverage can extend the original warranty by up to one extra year and pays the lower of repair or replacement cost under the original warranty terms. If the original warranty is longer than five years, you must register with the Operations Centre within one year of purchase. Lifetime warranties, used or refurbished goods, and vehicles are not covered. This benefit shares the $60,000 lifetime account maximum with purchase protection and is supplementary to other coverage. The claim timelines are the same: contact immediately, written notice within 30 days, proof within 90 days, and no later than one year after the incident if you cannot file on time.
