Hilton’s Free Night Reward is an exceptionally useful certificate. There is no hotel-category restriction: if a hotel has a standard award room available, you can use the certificate to book it.
When certificates were first introduced, it was inconvenient because you could not see any information about them. Now, once you sign in to your Hilton account, you can view available certificates and their expiry dates.
Booking and extensions
You must call Hilton support to use a Free Night Reward to book a hotel.

If you would rather not speak English, you can also call Hilton’s mainland China support line at 400-820-0500. It is not available 24 hours a day, so call during mainland China business hours.
I generally use Google Voice or WeChat Out to call mainland China.
- Trying to extend an expiring reward
Unlike Marriott, which does not allow Free Night Awards to be extended, Hilton is generally more flexible with extensions. With a reasonable reason and a helpful agent, it can be possible to extend a certificate for a period of time. Based on reader reports, one week to three months is fairly common.
When planning a trip, I needed to use a certificate for a stay after its expiry date. I first tried Chinese-speaking support. The agent was polite and gentle, but could not resolve the issue or grant an extension. Later that evening, I called English support instead. An agent with a fairly heavy accent—possibly at an outsourced call centre, given the time and accent—quickly extended the certificate and booked the hotel. He was professional and helpful.
Earning Free Night Rewards
For points-and-miles enthusiasts, Free Night Rewards are relatively easy to earn through 🇺🇸 Amex Hilton co-branded cards. The main routes are welcome offers, holding a card, and spending.

From time to time, a new Hilton co-branded card application offers a Free Night Reward as part of the welcome bonus.
- Holding a card
Hold an Amex Hilton Aspire and you receive one Free Night Reward each cardmember year.
- Spending
Hold an Amex Hilton Surpass and spend $15,000 in a calendar year to receive one Free Night Reward.
Hold an Amex Hilton Aspire and spend $30,000 in a calendar year to receive one Free Night Reward; spend $60,000 to receive another one.
The Aspire is a superb hotel card with a negative effective annual fee, so it is a card worth keeping. I have seen people hold five Aspires to fill their card slots. That can work too: without any spending, five cards can generate five Free Night Rewards every year, making a family luxury-hotel getaway very enjoyable.
Thoughts
Chinese-speaking support is certainly polite, but it may lack the authority or service mindset to handle requests that fall slightly outside normal procedures, and can reject them outright. I suggest using Chinese-speaking support for regular bookings. For extension requests, call English support directly.
This reminds me of a flight-change issue I encountered last year. Because I could not enter the transit country, I wanted to change to a flight departing the same day. ANA’s China support initially rejected the request by following the script, while Japan support later helped enthusiastically. The contrast was striking. Read the write-up.
