Travel-related insurance

- Emergency health, trip cancellation, and baggage
Travel coverage lasts a maximum of 3 days. The departure day and the return day each count as a full day. A trip longer than 3 days has no card-included coverage for the entire trip, and you cannot stitch this coverage together with other insurance. The cardholder and an eligible spouse, children, or grandchildren travelling for the entire trip can be covered, and they must live in Canada at least six months a year. Emergency health coverage also requires government health insurance from the home province or territory for the whole trip. Emergency health care is up to $5,000,000 per person per trip for age 75 and under. Living expenses caused by a delayed return are up to $200 a day and $2,000 in total. Trip cancellation or modification is up to $500 per person per trip before departure and up to $1,000 while travelling, and eligible trip costs must be charged to this card. Baggage stolen, lost or damaged by a carrier, or delayed more than 6 hours is up to $500 per person per trip, including up to $250 to replace essential documents.
- Travel accident coverage and key conditions
Travel accident coverage pays up to $10,000. If airfare is charged in full to this card, death or the loss of two limbs or of sight during the flight is up to $10,000, and the loss of one is up to $5,000. The maximum age for emergency health and trip cancellation or modification is 75; baggage and accident coverage have no age cap. Before departure the card must be activated, the account cannot be more than 90 days past due, and privileges cannot be suspended. For a medical emergency, contact the 24-hour assistance service first, or you may have to pay part of the cost yourself. Emergency health coverage excludes pre-existing conditions that were unstable in the 182 days before departure (90 days if you are under 55). Trip cancellation and modification also restrict conditions that were unstable in the 90 days before you bought the trip. File a claim within 90 days of the triggering event, and submit the supporting documents within 90 days after the insurer asks for them.
Purchase-related insurance
- Mobile Device Insurance
A new phone or an eligible refurbished phone can be paid in full with this card. If you finance it through a Canadian telecom contract, the down payment and every monthly payment during the contract must also be charged to this card. Coverage starts on the later of 30 days after purchase or the date the first monthly payment posts, and it ends no later than two years after purchase. It also ends if you miss a monthly payment that had to be charged to this card, if the account is closed, or if you are no longer eligible. For loss, theft, accidental damage, or mechanical breakdown, the payout is the lower of repair or replacement cost, after 2% depreciation for each full month and a $25, $50, $75, or $100 deductible, up to $1,000. There is a maximum of one claim every 12 consecutive months and two claims every 48 consecutive months. Accessories, batteries, business or resale phones, used phones, and most refurbished phones are not covered. Notify the insurer within 14 days of the incident. For theft or loss you must also notify the telecom provider within 48 hours, and for theft you must file a police report within 7 days.
- Purchase Protection
New personal items bought worldwide must be paid in full with this card (or with BONUSDOLLARS). If they are lost, stolen, or damaged within 90 days of purchase, you can claim repair or replacement costs, up to $10,000 per item and $50,000 lifetime per account, and no more than the amount actually charged. Cash and negotiable instruments, plants and animals, perishables, motor vehicles and their parts, normal wear, unexplained disappearance, business-use items, and mail-order goods that were never received are not covered.
- Extended Warranty
Most new personal items paid in full with this card (or with BONUSDOLLARS) automatically get the original warranty doubled when that warranty is five years or less, for up to one extra year. Eligible parts and labour for a mechanical failure can be covered. The cap is $10,000 per item and $50,000 lifetime per account. Items with an original warranty longer than five years, motor vehicles and their parts, and business-use items are not covered. For mobile-device and purchase-protection claims, get insurer approval before a repair or replacement, and notify the insurer as soon as you learn of the incident.
