United launched a new “Switch To Better Wi-Fi” status-match promotion today, taking direct aim at Delta and American elite members. If you hold elite status with either airline and are a U.S. resident, you can apply for the corresponding United Premier status.

Background: An Inflight Wi-Fi Dispute Turns Into a Fight for Elite Flyers

The dispute began with reports that Delta CEO Ed Bastian had recently rejected Starlink, saying, “We do not want to be with Elon Musk.” Musk responded that Bastian would lose his job over it. American and United seized the opportunity that same day to promote status matches to Delta elite members. Today, United went a step further, turning the offer into a “better Wi-Fi” marketing campaign with the slogan, “Don’t keep buffering: switch to United and get the fastest Wi-Fi in the sky.”

Promotion Details

  • Application window: From now through October 15, 2026, extended to October 22, 2026
  • Eligibility: U.S. residents with Delta SkyMiles or American AAdvantage elite status. Both earned and lifetime status qualify; temporary, trial, or promotional status does not.
  • How the match works: Approved applicants receive the corresponding United Premier status for 90 days.
  • How to keep it: Purchase and actually fly United or United Express tickets during the 90-day challenge period, meeting the spending requirement below, to retain your matched status through January 31, 2028.
United status Corresponding Delta status Corresponding AA status Spending required within 90 days
Premier Silver Silver Medallion AAdvantage Gold $1,500
Premier Gold Gold Medallion AAdvantage Platinum $3,000
Premier Platinum Platinum Medallion AAdvantage Platinum Pro $4,500
Premier 1K Diamond Medallion AAdvantage Executive Platinum $7,000

United also lists matches for certain lifetime statuses, AA ConciergeKey, and Delta 360 members.

Key Terms

  • Only base fares and airline-imposed surcharges count toward qualifying spending, including the cash portion of Money + Miles tickets. Taxes, paid upgrades, Economy Plus purchases, and similar extras do not count.
  • You must both purchase the tickets and complete the flights during the challenge period. Booking next year’s trips in advance does not count, nor does buying tickets for family members.
  • Spending more cannot move you to a higher tier than the one you matched to.
  • United says it will respond to applications within three business days.
  • Some partner benefits may be unavailable during the challenge, including Star Alliance lounge access.
  • After completing the challenge, Premier Platinum members receive 20 PlusPoints and Premier 1K members receive 100 PlusPoints, less than the usual full allotment.

My Take

If you already plan to fly United and can meet the spending requirement along the way, this match effectively gives you more than a year of elite status at no extra cost. But if you need to create trips or buy expensive tickets just to reach the threshold, it is not worth it. Spending $7,000 for Premier 1K with 100 PlusPoints is poor value however you look at it.
