TD has two very different points ecosystems in Canada. Aeroplan is tied closely to Air Canada, while TD Rewards is TD’s own fixed-value program for its Travel and Rewards cards.

If you want travel rewards that are easy to earn and straightforward to redeem, TD Rewards is worth knowing. You do not need to learn airline award charts or hunt for a premium-cabin sweet spot. Here is how the program works, how to earn points, and where to get the most value from them.

What Are TD Rewards Points?

TD Rewards is TD’s in-house points program for eligible Travel and Rewards credit cards.

  • A fixed-value currency: At its best rate through Expedia For TD, 200 points = $1 CAD, or 0.5 cents per point.
  • Points do not expire: As long as your credit-card account stays open and in good standing, your points remain available.
  • No award-travel headaches: There are no blackout dates or complicated award pools. Think of TD Rewards as a travel fund you can put toward eligible bookings and charges.

How to Earn TD Rewards Points

You’ll earn TD Rewards through everyday card spending, welcome offers, and a small number of partner bonuses.

1. Everyday Card Spending

TD has several cards that earn TD Rewards, from no-fee options to its flagship travel card.

Card Expedia For TD bookings Groceries / dining Transit / rideshares Recurring bills / streaming Everything else
TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite (flagship) 8x 6x 6x 4x 2x
TD Platinum Travel Visa (mid-tier) 6x 4.5x 4.5x 3x 1.5x
TD Rewards Visa (no-fee entry card) 4x 2x 2x 2x 1x
TD Business Travel Visa (business card) 9x (online) 6x 6x 6x 2x

2. Welcome Offers and Cardholder Perks

  • Welcome offers: TD often runs large offers on its flagship cards, sometimes worth 100,000 to 150,000 points with a first-year-free promotion.
  • Birthday bonus: The First Class Travel Visa Infinite gives you a 10% bonus on the points earned from regular purchases in the previous year, up to 10,000 points (worth $50).
  • Annual travel credit: Spend at least $500 through Expedia For TD with the First Class Travel Visa Infinite and you can receive a $100 TD Travel Credit each year.

3. Starbucks Partner Benefits

Link an eligible TD card with Starbucks® Rewards in the TD app and you can:

  • Earn 50% more TD Rewards points on Starbucks purchases, alongside additional Starbucks Stars.
  • Convert points directly to Starbucks Stars, starting at 700 points.

How to Use TD Rewards Points

The value of TD Rewards depends on how you redeem. Expedia For TD is the best option; the alternatives are useful in a pinch, but cost you points.

1. Book Travel Through Expedia For TD — Best Value

  • Rate: 200 points = $1 CAD (0.5 cents per point).
  • What you can book: Flights, hotels, rental cars, vacation packages, and activities through ExpediaForTD.com.
  • Why it works: There is no minimum redemption. You can pay with a mix of points and your card, and the card-paid portion can still earn up to 8x or 9x points.

2. Redeem for Travel You Booked Yourself — More Flexible

If you book directly with an airline or hotel, use Airbnb, or choose another travel site, you can still use points after the charge posts.

  • Rate: 225 points = $1 CAD, or about 0.44 cents per point.
  • How it works: Use Pay Off Purchases in the TD app to apply points to an eligible travel charge. You get more booking flexibility, but give up some value compared with Expedia For TD.

3. Other Redemptions — Usually Not Worth It

  • Amazon Shop with Points: About 303 points = $1 CAD (0.33 cents per point). It is convenient at Amazon.ca checkout, but more than 30% worse than the best travel rate.
  • Regular statement credits and gift cards: Usually 400 points = $1 CAD (0.25 cents per point). That is only half the value you can get through Expedia For TD.

Strengths and Weaknesses

What TD Rewards Does Well

  1. Points do not expire. Keep your account in good standing and you can save points without a deadline hanging over you.
  2. Simple and flexible travel redemptions. You can use Expedia For TD for the best rate or Pay Off Purchases for travel booked elsewhere.
  3. A solid flagship-card package. The First Class Travel Visa Infinite includes a $100 annual travel credit, four Visa Airport Companion lounge passes, and broad travel insurance.

Where It Falls Short

  1. No transfer partners. You cannot move TD Rewards to Aeroplan, Asia Miles, Marriott Bonvoy, or another loyalty program. Unlike transferable currencies such as Amex Membership Rewards or RBC Avion, it cannot unlock outsized value on business- or first-class awards.
  2. Non-travel redemptions are weak. Cash back, Amazon purchases, and gift cards are worth only 0.25 to 0.33 cents per point.

Who Should Use TD Rewards?

TD Rewards is a good fit if you:

  • Prefer a simple program over complex airline miles and award charts.
  • Often book flights, hotels, or rental cars through a travel site such as Expedia.
  • Spend regularly on groceries, dining, transit, and recurring bills in Canada.

The practical play is simple: redeem through Expedia For TD whenever you can to get 0.5 cents per point. If that does not work for your booking, travel purchases erased through Pay Off Purchases are the next-best option. Skip ordinary cash back and gift cards unless convenience matters more than value.

If the First Class Travel Visa Infinite is a fit, its annual $100 travel credit can offset much of the fee. Add the birthday bonus and strong everyday earn rates, and it is the card that gets the most out of TD Rewards.
