【August 23, 2026 update】 Tangerine Wealth is running a limited-time investment promotion. The key details are:

  • How it works: If you transfer or add at least $25,000 to a Tangerine investment account, such as a TFSA, RSP, or Non-Registered account, by October 30, 2026, and invest it in one of the designated portfolios, such as Tangerine Investment Funds or ETF Portfolios, you can receive a reward worth 2% in cash or fund units.
  • How to get 3%: If you successfully refer a friend who also opens a Tangerine account and makes a qualifying investment, your reward rate can increase from 2% to 3%.
  • Reward payments: The reward is not paid all at once. Monthly instalments begin in January 2027, with the 2% tier paid over 30 months and the 3% tier paid over 45 months.

In simple terms, Tangerine is encouraging you to move an investment account or cash from another bank to its mutual funds or investment portfolios in exchange for a new-customer and asset-transfer reward.

Enter OrangeKey referral code 58225243S1 when opening a new account to receive a $50 reward after meeting the requirements.

Tangerine is one of Canada’s best-known digital banks. Formerly ING Direct Canada, it was acquired by Scotiabank in 2012 and renamed Tangerine. It continues to provide banking services under its own brand, and many Chinese-speaking customers affectionately call it the Orange Bank.

Unlike traditional banks that rely heavily on branch networks, Tangerine provides most of its account-opening, everyday banking, credit card, savings, and investment services through its website and mobile app. Its products have one obvious feature: the structure is relatively simple. This guide focuses on the personal products Tangerine offers.

Tangerine Bank is also an independent member institution of the Canada Deposit Insurance Corporation (CDIC). Eligible Tangerine deposit products can receive the applicable CDIC deposit-insurance protection, with up to C$100,000 of coverage per account.

Tangerine Bank

No-Fee Daily Chequing Account

This is one of Tangerine’s most representative products. Its main features include:

  • No monthly account fee: There is no minimum balance requirement and no fixed monthly maintenance fee.
  • Free everyday transactions and transfers: The account includes unlimited everyday transactions and free Interac e-Transfer transactions.
  • Interest on the balance: Unlike many traditional bank chequing accounts, money held in this account can earn interest at tiered rates. ⚠️ The rate is usually very low, so the money is generally better placed in a savings account.
  • Free ATM network: You can use Scotiabank ABMs in Canada and around the world to withdraw and deposit cash without a fee.
    • Free cheque book: The first 50-cheque book is free; additional cheque books cost $50.

Because many of its services are free, you can link external bank accounts to Tangerine and use it as a hub for moving money between banks. For example, you can link CIBC and TD to Tangerine, then pull money from CIBC into Tangerine and push money to TD. ⚠️ Keep in mind that the limit for pulling money from an external bank account is high, but the limit for pushing money from Tangerine to an external bank is much lower—C$25,000 or C$50,000, according to unconfirmed data points. In this situation, you can call customer service and ask them to transfer all the money in your Tangerine account to a linked external bank account; the limit can reportedly reach eight figures.

Tangerine frequently runs account-opening promotions. At the time of writing, new customers can receive a $250 bonus by opening a new account and setting up Direct Deposit. This can be combined with the referral offer: enter OrangeKey referral code 58225243S1 during registration, deposit at least $250 within 60 days, and keep it there for 60 days. Both parties then receive a $50 reward.

Savings Accounts

Savings Accounts are another core Tangerine product. The structure is similarly simple: $0 monthly fee and no minimum balance requirement. In addition to calculating interest daily, the account offers:

  • Multiple currencies and registered accounts: Options include the regular Savings Account, Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA), Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RSP), Registered Retirement Income Fund (RIF), and US$ Savings Account.
  • Flexible access with no minimum: There is no minimum deposit requirement, and you can deposit or withdraw money at any time without a regular maintenance fee.
  • Automated savings tools: The Automatic Savings Program (ASP) lets you set up recurring automatic transfers to build a savings habit.

Like the chequing account, the Savings Account frequently comes with account-opening promotions, such as the current 4.5% interest rate for five months. Tangerine also often offers existing customers promotional rates when they deposit new money. A common tactic is to move the money out when the promotion ends and leave the account empty; after some time, Tangerine may email you about another promotional offer.

Credit Cards

Tangerine was once best known for its Money-Back Cashback credit card, but its product line has expanded. Tangerine currently has three personal credit cards:

The Money-Back Credit Card and Money-Back World Mastercard both have no annual fee. You can choose two or three spending categories to earn 2% cash back. When cash back is automatically deposited into a Tangerine Savings Account, you get one additional 2% cash-back category, for a total of three. The World Mastercard also offers additional travel and lifestyle benefits compared with the basic credit card.

The Tangerine Rewards World Elite Mastercard is the highest-positioned personal credit card in the Tangerine lineup and earns Scene+ points. It has a $120 annual fee and offers various benefits, including airport-lounge access and travel-related insurance.

GICs - Guaranteed Investments

A GIC locks in your money and interest rate for a set term, after which you receive the principal and agreed interest. Compared with GIC rates from Canada’s Big Five banks, Tangerine’s rates are very generous and often much higher. In addition to competitive rates, its GICs have these features:

  • Principal protection and a locked-in return: You receive a defined, guaranteed fixed rate, making GICs suitable for more conservative investors.
  • Flexible term options: Terms range from short periods, such as a few months, to longer periods of one to five years.
  • Multiple account types: Tangerine offers regular non-registered GICs, TFSA GICs, RSP GICs, RIF GICs, and U.S.-dollar GICs.

⚠️ Keep in mind that Tangerine GICs are non-redeemable GICs. If you need a high level of liquidity, this is not a good choice.

Investing

Tangerine’s investing business is not a self-directed brokerage like Wealthsimple or Questrade, where you buy and sell stocks and ETFs yourself. Its core offering is Tangerine Investment Funds: you choose an asset-allocation portfolio, and the fund handles the holdings and rebalancing internally.

Tangerine currently divides its investment products into four main categories:

1. Core Portfolios

These are traditional investment portfolios built around passively managed index funds. Different stock and bond allocations are used to control risk. You do not need to decide which Canadian stock or U.S. ETF to buy or when to rebalance. Instead, you choose a portfolio based on your risk tolerance. Tangerine reviews the portfolio and rebalances it quarterly when necessary.

2. Global ETF Portfolios

You can think of these as mutual funds that hold ETFs. The funds hold multiple ETFs and use them to invest in global markets. Tangerine says the investment universe covers more than 45 countries. The current choices use different stock and bond allocations, such as a Balanced Growth ETF Portfolio with 75% stocks and 25% bonds.

The advantage is that you do not have to buy ETFs one by one, calculate the allocation, or rebalance the portfolio yourself; the fund handles the asset allocation for you. The trade-off is that you pay mutual-fund management fees.

3. Socially Responsible Global Portfolios

These portfolios consider Environmental, Ethical, and Social Factors in addition to investment returns. They are Tangerine’s dedicated option for investors who want global diversification while placing more weight on ESG or SRI factors.

4. Money Market Fund

This is currently the lower-risk option among Tangerine’s investment products. It is a low-risk solution for short-term funds, with the goal of protecting investment value as much as possible during periods of market volatility.

These portfolios can be held within different account structures, including TFSA, RSP, RIF, and Non-Registered Investment Fund Accounts.

Conclusion

As a no-monthly-fee bank that occasionally offers very competitive rates, Tangerine has remained one of my core banks for the long term. If you have a large number of transactions in a given month, consider moving the money to Tangerine and using it to carry them out.
