If you are tired of lookalike international chains and want more design, more local character, or a truly private independent luxury stay, SLH (Small Luxury Hotels of the World) is worth a close look. As a leading alliance of independent boutique hotels, it gathers hundreds of very different high-end properties. This article covers the collection, membership benefits, and how the loyalty programmes work (earn, redeem, and what is distinctive).

What is SLH?

SLH is not a traditional hotel brand owned by a single group (such as Marriott or Hyatt). It is a global alliance of independent luxury hotels, founded in 1990 and based in London. It now has more than 650 hotels in 90-plus countries, and it is still expanding quickly. In 2025 SLH added 100 member hotels, the highest annual signings in the brand’s history. In the first quarter of 2026 alone, 29 more hotels joined, taking the total past 700 properties in 100 countries.

What they share is small scale, distinctive design, and a deep local connection. One might be a restored 19th-century house in Anacapri, Italy; another a wilderness spa resort on a river in Assam, India; another a townhouse hotel in Reims, the capital of Champagne, created by a Champagne house. That variety is the point: every hotel is independent, and every stay feels different.

The bar to join is high. SLH audits member hotels rigorously, from service details and dining to sustainability, with mystery-guest checks each year, so “small and beautiful” still has to mean luxury.

Membership: The Club by SLH and the Hilton partnership

SLH membership now runs on two tracks: its own programme, SLH Club, and its strategic partnership with Hilton Honors (see A large number of SLH hotels now on Hilton 🔗).

  1. The official programme: SLH Club

SLH’s official frequent-stay programme has been upgraded to SLH Club. Joining is free. It does not run a large traditional points currency; it focuses on on-the-spot privileges and stay rewards.

SLH Club is tiered (based on qualifying nights or spend in a 12-month period):

  • Club 01 (join immediately / entry tier, 0–3 nights): member rates (Club Rate), complimentary in-room Wi-Fi and bottled water, flexible check-in/out subject to availability (for example noon early check-in or 2 p.m. late checkout). For every night booked, SLH plants two trees in the member’s name through Tree-Nation.
  • Club 02 (mid tier, 4–12 nights): everything in Club 01, plus complimentary continental breakfast for two, room upgrades subject to availability, and occasional priority on SLH Bonus Rates.
  • Club 03 (top tier, 13+ nights or US$6,000 in spend): everything in the tiers below, a Reward Night voucher worth up to US$300, dedicated VIP support, selected in-person and online SLH Club events, and prize draws for free nights at any SLH hotel worldwide.

(Note: some premium credit cards and airline or bank partners, such as Mastercard World / World Elite, occasionally match or upgrade members straight into Club 02 or Club 03. For example, in August 2025 there was an offer that granted Club 02 on registration.)

⚠️ Only stays booked through official SLH channels count as qualifying nights. Stays booked through Hilton do not.

⚠️ Club 03 Reward Night vouchers:

SLH Club does not issue traditional points, but the top tier, Club 03, issues a Reward Night voucher. Current official rules treat one Reward Night as a US$300 stay credit against one night at an SLH hotel. If the rate is above US$300, you pay the difference; if it is below US$300, the unused value is not refunded. Reward Nights are valid for 12 months from issue, can only be used on a new booking, and you must contact SLH Club at least 14 days in advance. Nights paid with a Reward Night do not earn Qualifying Nights.

  1. Hilton Honors partnership status

Hilton and SLH announced an exclusive strategic partnership in 2024, and a large number of SLH hotels have since joined Hilton’s booking system. Participating hotels can be searched and booked on Hilton.com and in the Hilton app, and Hilton Honors members can earn and redeem Hilton Honors Points there.

If you book and stay at a participating SLH hotel through official Hilton channels, you do not earn SLH Club qualifying nights, but you do get Hilton elite benefits: Gold and Diamond members still receive complimentary breakfast for two, room upgrades (subject to availability), late checkout, and Hilton bonus points. That path suits travellers who already concentrate points and status inside Hilton.

How do you earn points?

Before the Hilton partnership, booking through SLH did not earn points; nights and spend only counted toward SLH membership tiers. After the 2024 announcement, if you stay at an SLH hotel in the Hilton programme and book through official Hilton channels, you earn Hilton Honors Points as usual.

  • You earn 10 Hilton Honors Base Points per US$1 of room rate.

SLH has one unusual limit: only the room rate itself earns points. Dining, spa, and other incidentals do not count as Eligible Spend the way they can at some Hilton-operated brands.

Hilton elites also get a tier bonus on those Base Points. Silver, Gold, Diamond, and Diamond Reserve currently add 20%, 80%, 100%, and 120% Elite Tier Bonus.

⚠️ You must book through official Hilton channels. Hilton is explicit that bookings made on the SLH website, by contacting the SLH hotel directly, through OTAs such as Booking.com and Expedia, or through some GDS channels, do not earn Hilton Honors Points and do not receive Hilton Honors in-hotel benefits.

How to use points at SLH

Turning points into a stay you actually want is the fun part. The practical plays:

  • Redeem Hilton points or Free Night Rewards for SLH nights

In the Hilton app or on the website, you can search and filter SLH hotels the same way you search other Hilton properties. Hilton uses dynamic award pricing; higher-end SLH hotels often cost about 80,000 to 130,000 points a night, depending on season.

  • Fifth night free

When you redeem points for five consecutive Standard Reward nights, the fifth night is free. That lifts the value of your points by 20% in one go.

  • Points + Money

If you do not have enough points for a full award, or you want to keep some cash free, Points + Money is a flexible way to book the SLH hotel you want.

  • Where the value is highest

The collection includes many hotels with very high cash rates that sit outside traditional chain award charts (private-island resorts, century-old European estates). Redeeming points there in high season can produce a striking cents-per-point return.

SLH Club or Hilton Honors?

One stay usually cannot credit both programmes. You choose SLH or Hilton:

  • Book on SLH.com or in the SLH app and you earn Qualifying Nights toward Club 01, Club 02, or Club 03. Hilton is clear that SLH-channel bookings do not earn Hilton Honors Points or Hilton Honors in-hotel benefits.

  • Book on Hilton.com or in the Hilton app and you earn Hilton Honors Points plus elite breakfast and upgrades, but the stay does not meet SLH Club’s channel rules for Qualifying Nights, so it will not normally progress your SLH Club tier.

Before you book, open both channels and compare:

  • If you do not have high Hilton status and you expect to stay at different SLH hotels over time, SLH Club may be the better default. Club 02 already includes breakfast and upgrades, and Club 03 adds a Reward Night.

  • If you already have Hilton Gold, Diamond, or Diamond Reserve, or a large Hilton Honors Points balance, booking through Hilton usually puts those points and that status to work. When you can find a Standard Room Reward, string together five award nights, or use a Hilton Free Night Reward, SLH becomes one of the more interesting corners of Hilton Honors.

Sometimes the SLH website rate is clearly cheaper than Hilton. Then points are not the only variable: weigh the rate difference, breakfast, upgrades, point earn, and whether you need nights toward one programme or the other.

Bottom line

What makes SLH unusual is that it is not a highly standardized chain. It places a large set of independent boutique hotels in one system. As of 2026 it has more than 700 hotels in 100-plus countries and territories, with about 50 rooms on average, so both the design and the stay can feel very different from a major chain.

For frequent travellers, SLH now has two plays.

The Club by SLH does not issue traditional hotel points. It rewards Qualifying Nights, elite benefits, and the Club 03 Reward Night. Through the Hilton partnership, some SLH hotels are fully in Hilton Honors: you can earn Hilton points, redeem them for stays, and use Gold, Diamond, and similar elite benefits.

So the real decision when you book SLH is not whether to join SLH Club—membership is free—but whether this stay should go through SLH’s official channel or Hilton’s.

For points collectors, that dual track adds options: compare SLH Club and Hilton elite benefits on a cash stay, and when you have the points, put Hilton Honors Points, fifth-night-free, and Free Night Rewards toward independent luxury hotels that were hard to book in a traditional hotel-points programme.
