At the end of 2025, Qtrade made a major strategic shift and cut its fees sharply to compete. Here is the latest 2026 overview:

1. Core advantages and features

  • Commission-free trading (major update): As of 2026, Qtrade has officially entered the zero-commission era. Buying and selling stocks, Canadian and US ETFs, and mutual funds currently carries no trading commission (options are the exception).
  • Top-tier customer service: This is Qtrade’s calling card. Compared with other low-cost brokerages, phone wait times are shorter and the staff are more professional.
  • Strong research tools: In-depth research from Morningstar, technical-analysis tools, a portfolio analyser (Portfolio Score), and ESG (environmental, social, and governance) scoring.
  • Credit-union backing: Qtrade is an Aviso Wealth brand and works closely with hundreds of credit unions across Canada, so the backing is solid.

2. Account types and fees

Qtrade supports almost every mainstream Canadian account type:

  • Tax-advantaged accounts: TFSA, FHSA, RRSP, RESP.
  • Non-registered accounts: cash accounts and margin accounts.
  • Main fees:
    • Stock / ETF trades: $0.
    • Options: $0 commission + about $0.75 per contract.
    • Non-registered account administration fee: $0
    • USD registered-account fee: If you turn on USD in an RRSP or TFSA, there is usually a fee of about $15 per quarter.

For which accounts charge administration fees and which services cost extra, see the official pricing page 🔗

Paper mail is charged. During account opening or after the account is open, choose eDocuments (Accounts → Service Centre → Sign Up for eDocuments)

3. Safety

Regulation: Regulated by CIRO (formerly IIROC).

Insurance: Qtrade is a member of the Canadian Investor Protection Fund (CIPF). If the brokerage fails, eligible accounts are covered for up to CA$1 million.

4. Drawbacks and things to watch

  • USD account fees: USD holdings are supported, but for small accounts (under $25,000) the quarterly USD registered-account fee is an extra burden.
  • No complex derivatives: Compared with Interactive Brokers (IBKR), Qtrade does not support cryptocurrency, futures, or forex trading.
  • Inactivity fee: If your account balance is very small and you have no trades or automatic contributions, an inactivity fee may apply.
