Everyday Spending
2%: eligible gas and grocery spend. The two categories share the first $500 each calendar month. Amounts over that monthly cap earn 0.5%. Gas is limited to Mastercard merchant category codes 5541 or 5542; groceries to 5411. MBNA uses the payment network’s merchant category code. If one purchase qualifies for more than one category, it earns in only one of them.
0.5%: other eligible spending. Amounts over the combined $500 monthly gas-and-grocery cap also earn at this rate. Cash advances, balance transfers, interest, fees, refunds, and similar credits do not earn MBNA Dollars. The account must stay open and in Good Standing.

- Trip Assistance and Legal Assistance
These are assistance services, not insurance, and you do not have to charge travel to this card to use them. They can help with emergency cash transfers, replacing lost documents/tickets, finding or replacing lost baggage, and passport, visa, and vaccine information. Emergency cash transfers are up to $5,000. Legal-adviser referrals, bail, and legal-fee arrangements are up to $5,000. Both require available credit and are charged to the account. Service may be unavailable in countries with political unrest or that the operations centre considers unsafe.
- Save with Avis Rent A Car and Budget Rent A Car
At participating Avis or Budget locations, charge the full rental to this card and use the stated discount code to save at least 10% on the base rate in Canada and the United States, and at least 5% at other international locations. Avis uses AWD #C078405; Budget uses BCD #A331704. The discount applies only to the base rate. Taxes, other charges, blackout dates, and rental terms are set by the rental company.

- Collision Damage Waiver
If the primary cardholder charges the full rental to this card, does not renew it, keeps it to 31 days or less, and declines the rental company’s CDW/LDW when offered, it covers collision damage or theft, valid loss of use, and reasonable towing. The lifetime aggregate per account is $65,000 and does not include third-party injury or property liability. Trucks, RVs, off-road vehicles, motorcycles, luxury/exotic vehicles valued at $65,000 or more, antiques, leased vehicles, and similar exclusions are not covered. Contact the Operations Centre as soon as possible and no later than 48 hours after an accident.
- Rental Vehicle Accidental Death and Dismemberment
During an eligible rental, accidental bodily injury to the primary cardholder, spouse, children, parents/in-laws, and siblings while in the rental pays up to $200,000 for the primary cardholder’s death or a listed major disability, and up to $20,000 for each other insured person. The per-account, per-accident maximum is $300,000. Illness, suicide, war, intoxication, drugs/poisons, and crime are excluded.
- Rental Vehicle Personal Effects
For the primary cardholder and a travelling spouse, children, parents/in-laws, and siblings, personal items lost, stolen, or damaged in transit, in a hotel, or in another building during an eligible rental are covered up to $1,000 per insured person per occurrence and $2,000 per account per rental period. This is excess coverage. Cash, tickets or documents, computers/software/phones, and unexplained loss are excluded.
- Common Carrier AD&D
If the primary cardholder charges all or part of a scheduled common-carrier fare to this card before departure, accidental bodily injury to the primary cardholder, spouse, and dependent children during the trip (including public transport to or from an airport, station, or terminal) pays up to $1,000,000 for death or a listed major disability; $500,000 for loss of one hand or foot, sight in one eye, speech, or hearing; and $250,000 for the thumb and index finger of the same hand. The per-account, per-accident maximum is $1,000,000. Illness, suicide, war, intoxication, drugs/poisons, and crime are excluded.
- Unexpected Return Home
If the primary cardholder charges all or part of a scheduled common-carrier fare to this card before departure, and an immediate relative dies during the trip, the primary cardholder, spouse, or dependent children can be reimbursed the lesser of the change fee or a one-way economy fare back to the province or territory of residence, up to $2,000 per insured person. You must contact the Operations Centre first so they can arrange it. Extra travel-insurance costs, and amounts already paid, credited, or vouchered, are not covered.
Purchase-related insurance
- Purchase Assurance
After you charge an eligible personal item in full to the account (an access cheque also qualifies), it is covered worldwide for up to 90 days against theft or accidental damage. The insurer may repair, replace, or pay the pre-tax purchase price. The lifetime aggregate per account is $60,000. Computers, software, and their parts/accessories are limited to $1,000 per loss in total. Jewellery and artwork are limited to $500 per item per loss. This is excess coverage. Cash, tickets, documents, living things, vehicles, normal wear, fraud, inherent defects, modifications, and unexplained loss are excluded.
- Extended Warranty
Eligible new items charged in full to the account, with a manufacturer warranty valid in Canada, can have that warranty doubled, up to one extra year. Coverage is automatic when the original warranty is five years or less. Longer warranties must be registered with the Operations Centre within one year of purchase. It covers only parts and labour for mechanical breakdown or failure already in the original warranty. Used goods and vehicles are excluded.
After a loss that may lead to a claim, contact the Operations Centre as soon as possible. The certificate requires notice within 30 days of the incident and proof of loss within 90 days. If you cannot reasonably meet those deadlines, handle it as soon as you can and no later than one year.
