Korean Air has published how SKYPASS and Asiana Club miles and status will combine after the merger. Closing is December 17, 2026. This is not a simple 1:1 account merge. Below is a walkthrough of the announced rules, conversion rates, status matching, and the Star Alliance exit timeline so you can decide what to do with the miles.

The headline: merging accounts does not force an immediate conversion

  • Accounts move automatically: From December 17, 2026, Asiana miles move into your SKYPASS account.
  • Two balances in one account for 10 years: After the move, a single SKYPASS account keeps SKYPASS miles and legacy Asiana miles as separate balances. You can leave the Asiana miles untouched for up to 10 years, or apply at any time to convert them into SKYPASS miles.
  • The conversion rate depends on how the miles were earned:
    • Flown miles (Asiana and Star Alliance flights): 1 : 1 into SKYPASS.
    • Partner miles (credit cards, hotels, car rental, and similar): 1 : 0.82 into SKYPASS.
  • Conversion limits: You must convert the full Asiana balance in one go (no partial conversion), and the move is irreversible. Expiry dates stay as they were; conversion does not reset or extend them.

Conversion and redemption details

1. How the rates work in practice

Say your Asiana account currently has 60,000 flown miles and 40,000 credit-card partner miles:

  • 60,000 flown miles → 60,000 SKYPASS miles
  • 40,000 partner miles × 0.82 → 32,800 SKYPASS miles
  • Combined total: 92,800 SKYPASS miles

Note: The two balances cannot be mixed to pay for the same award ticket. If you need to combine them to reach a redemption threshold, you have to complete the irreversible conversion first.

2. Limits if you keep the old Asiana miles

If you hold off on converting and spend the legacy Asiana miles as they are:

  • What still works: You can redeem them under Asiana’s original award chart for Korean Air-operated flights in economy, business class, and upgrades, including routes Korean Air previously flew on its own.
  • What does not: Legacy Asiana miles cannot be used directly for SkyTeam or other Korean Air partner awards. First class is not included. Peak dates, taxes, and fuel surcharges follow SKYPASS rules.

Status matching and the new SKYPASS structure

When the merger takes effect, Asiana elite members are matched into the corresponding SKYPASS tier. Current status validity does not change. Members who hold both programs keep the higher of the two.

Note: Korean Air will introduce the new Morning Calm Select Club tier from October 28, 2026, so Asiana Diamond and term Diamond Plus members still have Elite Plus benefits after they move into SkyTeam.

Deadlines: Asiana leaves Star Alliance

As the merger proceeds, Asiana leaves Star Alliance at 23:59 Korea time on December 16, 2026. Watch these cut-offs:

  1. Crediting Asiana flights to another Star Alliance program: the flight must depart on October 15, 2026 or earlier.
  2. Crediting Star Alliance partner flights to Asiana: you can still fly through December 16, but flights from October 16 onward need a manual post-flight credit request.
  3. Star Alliance partner award tickets: legacy Asiana miles can be kept for 10 years, but the window to book Star Alliance partner awards closes when Asiana exits. Ticket those awards before then.

Extra change: Cash and Miles gets more flexible

Korean Air is also loosening the mixed Cash and Miles payment rules:

  • Old rule: 500-mile minimum, up to 30% of the fare.
  • New rule: 100-mile minimum, up to 40% of the fare.

That mainly helps you clear small leftover balances.

What to do next

  1. Link the accounts now: Sign in on the Korean Air / Asiana integration site and use “Find My Member Account” so the December 17 move is automatic. Linking is not the same as agreeing to convert miles.
  2. Save your records: Screenshot and note how your current Asiana miles were earned (flown vs partner) and when they expire.
  3. Sit tight unless you need to convert: Unless you have a specific Korean Air premium-cabin award that only works if the two pools are combined, keep the legacy Asiana balance. Converting partner miles at 0.82 can leave value on the table.
  4. Star Alliance itineraries first: If you still need a Star Alliance award, or you have travel that straddles the merger date, ticket or change it in the fourth quarter of 2026.
