【October 21, 2026 update】 Buy DISCOVERY Dollars at a 15% discount through November 19.
The cost is US$0.85 per D$, with a limit of D$5,000 per person. D$ are valid for 24 months and non-refundable. The portion paid with D$ no longer earns D$, so the effective net saving is about 8%–11%. Canadian residents pay sales tax when buying, so a U.S. card is preferable. This promotion appears several times a year and has historically been 15%; buy only after you have a confirmed stay.
You may have seen the same logo when staying at Kempinski, Anantara, Capella, or Pan Pacific: GHA DISCOVERY. It does not belong to any one hotel group. Instead, it is the unified loyalty programme of the world’s largest independent hotel alliance—one account and one currency covering more than 45 brands and over 850 hotels. This guide explains GHA’s background, brand portfolio, status benefits, and how to earn and spend its rewards currency, Discovery Dollars (D$).
What Is GHA?
The Hotel Industry’s “Airline Alliance”
GHA stands for Global Hotel Alliance. Founded in 2004 and headquartered in Dubai, it directly borrows from airline alliances such as Star Alliance and oneworld: independent hotel brands without their own global frequent-guest programme join forces, share one loyalty programme, one booking platform, and one rewards currency, while each brand keeps its independent operations and personality.
Some key milestones:
- 2010: The alliance launched its DISCOVERY loyalty programme.
- December 2021: The programme was relaunched and renamed GHA DISCOVERY, introducing DISCOVERY Dollars (D$), a rewards currency pegged 1:1 to the U.S. dollar and still used today.
- Late 2021: Luxury travel club ASMALLWORLD acquired a 10% stake in GHA’s parent company, creating a cross-shareholding relationship. That is why ASW packages have long included GHA Titanium status; PerkFox also has a separate guide to ASMALLWORLD.
- 2025–2026: Expansion accelerated. After the brands of Thailand’s Minor Hotels (including Anantara, Avani, NH, Tivoli, and Oaks) joined in full, Minor became the member group with the most hotels in the alliance. Almanac, Regal, STORY, Turkey’s Marmara, and Poland’s PURO joined in 2026. In October 2026, Singapore’s Far East Hospitality announced that it would join with five brands and 26 hotels, including Oasia, Quincy, and Village; the integration is expected in early 2027.
As of October 2026, GHA has approximately 45+ brands, 850+ hotels, a presence in more than 100 countries and regions, and about 38 million members (official figures). It cannot match Marriott, Hilton, or Hyatt in sheer hotel count, but it is the undisputed leader in the independent-hotel segment.
Brands and Representative Hotels
GHA is centred on luxury and upper-upscale hotels. Its brands can be grouped roughly as follows (selected examples):
Ultra-luxury: Capella, Patina, The Leela, Corinthia, Lungarno Collection, Fauchon, The Sukhothai, Viceroy, Doyle Collection, Almanac
Luxury and upper-upscale: Kempinski, Anantara, Pan Pacific, PARKROYAL COLLECTION, Marco Polo, Niccolo, JA Resorts, Nikki Beach, Tivoli, Divani, Cheval Collection, Lanson Place, Regal, Sun International
Upper-midscale and lifestyle: Avani, NH Hotels, NH Collection, nhow, Oaks, PARKROYAL, SAii, STORY, The Marmara, PURO, Verdi, iStay
Select and resort: ASMALLWORLD DISCOVERY, Ultratravel Collection, Elewana, Outrigger, Araiya, Mysk, Shaza, NUO, Elite World, plus Far East’s Oasia, Quincy, Rendezvous, Village, and Far East Collection, scheduled to launch in 2027
Readers may want to note a few locations:
- Mainland China: Kempinski is the main presence, with multiple hotels in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and elsewhere. Other examples include NUO Beijing, Pan Pacific hotels in Xiamen, Suzhou, and Ningbo, and Marco Polo hotels in Wuhan, Chengdu, and Beijing.
- Hong Kong: Marco Polo Hong Kong, The Murray from the Niccolo portfolio, Lanson Place, and 11 Regal properties.
- Singapore: Capella, Pan Pacific, and PARKROYAL COLLECTION Pickering are notable examples. Singapore will also receive part of Far East Hospitality’s 26 properties in 2027.
- Canada: Only the Pan Pacific brand is present, with three properties: Pan Pacific Vancouver, Pan Pacific Whistler Mountainside, and Pan Pacific Whistler Village Centre. Pan Pacific Toronto is no longer part of GHA or Pan Pacific. In February 2026, it formally left Pan Pacific and joined IHG under the name Crowne Plaza Toronto North York.
⚠️ North America is GHA’s weak spot overall. There are very few hotels in the United States, which is a structural limitation of the programme.
Membership Tiers and Elite Benefits
Four Tiers Plus a “Brand Run” Shortcut
GHA DISCOVERY has four public tiers. Qualification is measured by calendar year (January 1 through December 31, based on checkout date), and you can qualify through any one of three paths:
| Tier | Nights | Eligible spend | Brand path | D$ earn rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Silver | Automatic on registration | — | — | 4% |
| Gold | 2 stays | US$1,000 | — | 5% |
| Platinum | 10 nights | US$5,000 | 2 brands | 6% |
| Titanium | 30 nights | US$15,000 | 3 brands | 7% |
⚠️ A few easy-to-miss details:
- Gold counts stays, not nights: Two stays qualify even if each is only one night; a single two-night stay counts as one stay.
- The brand path is the fastest route to the top: Stay at three different brands within one year—even for one night each—and you reach Titanium. NH Hotels, NH Collection, and nhow are combined as one brand for this calculation.
- Status validity: Status takes effect after qualification and lasts through December 31 of the following year. If you fail to requalify, GHA uses a soft landing: you drop by at most one tier per year rather than falling directly from Titanium to Silver.
- There is also a private, invitation-only Red tier with no public qualification threshold. Its main benefit is suite upgrades, subject to availability.
Elite Benefits: Titanium Breakfast Depends on the Brand
| Benefit | Silver | Gold | Platinum | Titanium |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Member rate (at least 10% off) | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| D$ earn rate | 4% | 5% | 6% | 7% |
| Dining/spa member discount | 10% | 10% | 15% | 15% |
| Free Wi-Fi and member offers | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Experiences / Local Offers eligibility | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Room upgrade (subject to availability) | — | — | One level | Two levels |
| Welcome amenity | — | — | ✓ | ✓ |
| Late checkout (subject to availability) | — | — | 3:00 p.m. | 4:00 p.m. |
| Early check-in at 11:00 a.m. (subject to availability) | — | — | — | ✓ |
| 48-hour booking guarantee | — | — | — | ✓ |
| Complimentary breakfast for two | — | — | — | ✓ (participating brands only) |
| Status sharing (one Titanium guest per year) | — | — | — | ✓ |
Three points need special attention:
- Breakfast is not universal across the portfolio. Titanium complimentary breakfast applies only at participating brands listed in the terms. The list includes Capella, Pan Pacific/PARKROYAL (from December 2024), The Leela (from November 2025), Marco Polo, Niccolo, and Regal. Kempinski, Anantara, Avani, and NH are not on the list. Always check the individual hotel page before booking; do not assume that “Titanium means breakfast.”
- The double upgrade is the headline benefit. Titanium can move a base room into a standard suite (but not a specialty suite). At brands such as Capella and Pan Pacific, where room-category price gaps can be large, this can be valuable. The terms still make the upgrade discretionary, and long-stay brands may withhold it.
- Status sharing is generous. A Titanium member who qualified through nights, spend, or brands can share Titanium with another member once per year. The recipient’s status remains valid through the end of the following year—effectively allowing one membership to support two Titanium members.
How to Earn and Spend GHA D$
Earning D$: 4%–7% Back on Net Eligible Spend
D$ are the core of the programme. Three points explain how they work:
1. The earning base is Net Eligible Spend: This is based on the folio after promotional discounts but before taxes, tips, and fees. It includes room charges and on-property dining, spa, and other charges posted to the room. The portion paid with D$ does not earn additional D$ (the D$ are applied first, then the remaining net amount is used for the calculation). Stays longer than 30 nights earn D$ only on the first 30 nights.
2. Both the earn rate and validity period depend on your tier when the D$ are earned:
| Tier when earned | Earn rate | Base D$ validity |
|---|---|---|
| Silver | 4% | 12 months |
| Gold | 5% | 18 months |
| Platinum | 6% | 24 months |
| Titanium | 7% | 24 months |
- Amounts are rounded down to whole D$. If the calculated amount is greater than zero but less than D$5, the programme awards a minimum of D$5.
- A status change does not alter the original expiry date of D$ already issued. Promotional D$ follow the terms of each promotion and usually expire sooner.
- You can earn without a hotel stay: At some participating independent restaurants, paying through the designated payment method earns D$ and eligible status spend.
3. What does not count: Stays booked through OTAs such as Expedia or Booking.com, wholesale travel rates, group or charter rates, industry rates, free stays, and award stays do not count toward status and generally do not earn D$ (a first stay may occasionally receive a promotional credit, but it will not count toward tier qualification). GHA stays should be booked through the official site or app, the brand’s website, or the hotel directly. Direct bookings also receive the member rate, which saves at least 10%.
GHA frequently runs “cashback multiplier” promotions. New hotels and double-D$ offers are common; after registering for a promotion, the base earn and the bonus can both double, making a Titanium double-D$ offer worth 14%. The website and Points.com also offer ways to buy D$ directly, with occasional 15%-off promotions; PerkFox tracks these in its hotel-promotion roundups.
Spending D$: 1 D$ = US$1 at Checkout
- Fixed value: D$1 = US$1. There is no award chart, dynamic pricing, or aspirational redemption. D$ are cashback, which is the fundamental difference between GHA and points programmes such as Marriott or Hyatt.
- At the hotel: During a stay, D$ can be applied to eligible charges such as the room, dining, and spa. A transaction must use at least D$10, with additional D$ applied in increments of one. D$ cannot cover taxes, tips, or fees. A reader datapoint suggests that lodging taxes in Canada may sometimes be payable with D$, but property-level execution may vary.
- When booking: Since July 31, 2024, the official website and app have allowed members to select D$ at checkout for eligible room rates at participating hotels. Because of taxes and other charges, D$ may cover only part of the room price.
- Where they work: D$ can be used across brands—you can earn D$ at Anantara and spend them at Capella, for example. A single reservation can apply D$ to at most two rooms. D$ cannot be used on ineligible OTA rates, and the system automatically uses the D$ that expire soonest.
- Without a stay: D$ can also buy member-only Experiences and Local Offers, such as local activities, dining, spa treatments, and day-use facilities, or be applied at participating restaurants.
In short, D$ are cash coupons for your next stay. Think of them as cashback and do not hoard them: Silver D$ expire after only 12 months, the shortest window in the programme.
Ways to Reach Elite Status Quickly
- Run the brands (most recommended): Stay one night at each of three different brands in a year for Titanium, or at two brands for Platinum. Choose an inexpensive destination combination—such as Avani + Anantara + SAii in Bangkok, or NH + another brand in Europe—and the cost can be modest.
- Paid status matches: GHA occasionally offers paid status-match campaigns. When available, members can use status from another hotel group to buy Platinum or Titanium; PerkFox follows these in its promotion roundups.
- ASMALLWORLD packages: ASW Prestige and Signature memberships include GHA Titanium because of the cross-shareholding relationship. This can suit travellers who are already interested in its mileage packages.
- Regional credit-card promotions: In some markets, such as selected Mastercard campaigns, credit-card promotions have offered a direct route to Platinum or Titanium. These are highly regional, so check the terms carefully.
- Get shared status: If you know a Titanium member who qualified normally, they have one sharing slot each year.
Who Is GHA DISCOVERY For?
GHA DISCOVERY is fundamentally a cashback programme. There is no award chart, free-night certificate, or sweet spot. You earn 4%–7% in U.S.-dollar credits and use them as real money off a future purchase. Its value is not in a points game but in three things: one account covering 45+ independent luxury brands, broad coverage in Asia-Pacific and Europe where the major chains may not reach, and relatively accessible Titanium status through three brands, with genuinely useful benefits such as a double upgrade and status sharing.
The weaknesses are just as clear: very few hotels in North America; a hard 12–24-month expiry for D$ that makes hoarding unattractive; brand-specific breakfast, with Kempinski and Anantara—two major names—conspicuously excluded; and upgrades that remain subject to availability rather than coming with a confirmed suite certificate.
A good fit: Travellers who often visit Asia-Pacific or Europe, like independent luxury hotels, and can spend several nights a year at GHA brands. Register for free Silver to get the member rate, then use a real trip to make a three-brand Titanium run. A poor fit: Travellers whose trips are mainly in North America or who want to redeem points for free nights. Marriott or Hyatt may be a better match.
