Two days ago, this blog covered a run of major changes coming to Alaska Airlines’ Atmos Rewards program. 4. What to pick

  1. First: the residency rules
  • Hawai‘i residents ➔ Huaka‘i by Hawaiian. The free neighbor-island bag and the 50% bonus are hard to pass up.
  • Alaska residents ➔ Club 49. Two or three free bags, plus 30% off a last-minute ticket, saves the most money.
  1. Second: the open communities, if one benefit is worth more than the rest
  • Traveling with a child 12 or under ➔ Families On the Go

  • Why: 20% of the points come back on a child’s award, so that ticket costs 20% less. For a family that redeems often, that is the clearest saving.

  • Chasing status, or transferring points from a credit card ➔ Global Locals

  • Why: extra 10% Status Points on international flights, plus 1 Status Point for every 25 points you transfer in. If you fly internationally or move bank points over to hold status, this is the fastest of the four.

  1. Third: a trip you already plan to take
  • Outdoors or food ➔ Active Escapes or Culinary Journeys
  • Why: visiting 10 designated destinations can pay the full 10,000 points and 10,000 Status Points.
  • When to switch: you can change communities once a year. If that year includes a national-park trip or a food trip, switch before you go and collect the challenge.

Atmos™ How You Earn: the three modes, and which to pick

Alaska’s Choose how you earn option lets you decide how flights earn points and Status Points. It takes effect on January 1, 2027, and you can change it once a year.

1. The three ways to earn

Mode How it earns What it covers Award tickets and extras
Distance traveled
(the current default)
1 mile flown = 1 point The classic rule. Points follow the miles you actually fly. Award travel also earns Status Points.
Price paid $1 spent = 5 points Based on the base fare, before taxes. Includes paid upgrades and seat fees.
Award travel earns 1 Status Point for every 20 points redeemed.
Segments flown 1 segment = 500 points Every one-way segment earns 500 points, whatever the distance. Award travel also earns 500 Status Points per segment.

Rules that apply to every mode:

  • Elite Status Point bonuses apply no matter which mode you pick.
  • Saver fares earn nothing.

2. Which one to pick

It comes down to how many miles you get per dollar and what kind of route you fly.

Distance traveled (the better default for most long-haul and cheap fares)

  • Fits: medium- and long-haul flying, including transcontinental and international trips, and anyone who usually buys a cheap fare.
  • The math: distance wins when the fare is under $200 per 1,000 miles (more than 5 miles per $1).
  • Example: a 2,500-mile transcontinental flight at $150:
    • Distance pays 2,500 points.
    • Price paid ($150 × 5) pays 750 points. The gap is large.

Price paid (company travel and expensive cabins)

  • Fits: last-minute flexible tickets, business or first class, or trips the company pays for.
  • The math: price paid wins when the fare is over $200 per 1,000 miles (fewer than 5 miles per $1).
  • Example: a 500-mile short hop bought at the last minute for $400:
    • Distance pays 500 points.
    • Price paid ($400 × 5) pays 2,000 points. Paid upgrades and seat fees earn too.

Segments flown (island hops and short connections)

  • Fits: very short hops, such as Hawaiian neighbor-island flights and regional connections, when the one-way fare is low.
  • The math: a segment under 500 miles, on a fare that is not expensive, still earns a flat 500 points.
  • Example: a 100–200 mile hop:
    • Distance pays 100–200 points.
    • Segments pays 500 points and 500 Status Points.

3. What to do

  • Stay on distance: if you mostly fly medium and long haul, care about Status Points on award tickets, or buy cheap fares, leave the default alone. That is the safer choice, and it earns more.
  • Switch to price paid: only if most of your flying is expensive—last-minute business trips, premium cabins, or a lot of paid seats and upgrades.
