Asian carriers are known for strong service, food, and overall experience—and Cathay Pacific is one of the standouts. What is it like in THE PIER, one of its flagship lounges at its home airport? On this trip I was flying Cathay from Hong Kong in economy, but Alaska Airlines Platinum status got me in for a look.

Location & access

Flights from HKG are international, so any eligible same-day itinerary can use this lounge. It sits near Gates 65 and 64; take the elevator down one level. Note ⚠️: it is a long walk from security—you need the Airport Express train within the terminal.

Access: same-day oneworld first class (plus one guest, who must also be on a oneworld flight), or oneworld Emerald status (plus one guest, also on a oneworld flight). Cathay Diamond members may bring two guests, who also need to be on oneworld flights.

Lounge & massage

With a long connection, join the massage queue first—waits of one to two hours or more are common. Beside it there is a quiet rest area if you want a short nap.

Food

If you are short on time, the self-serve area has lighter options: pastries, salads, snacks, coffee, soft drinks, beer, and more.

There is also a dedicated à la carte restaurant—proper fine dining. The standard is much higher than typical lounge buffets. Wine and other drinks are available; I ordered a Cathay specialty cocktail. A local next to me polished off three bowls of the mushroom chicken soup starter.

Other areas

There are also work booths, quieter seating, and similar spaces.

Wrap-up

Unlike some sprawling lounges, THE PIER is mid-sized but finely finished, with clear zones. HKG has many strong lounges and the bar is high; as a first class product, THE PIER still stands apart—a classic for a reason.
