Everyday Spending
5x: Eligible grocery and restaurant purchases. The bonus depends on total gross purchases of every category charged to the account in the billing cycle, not on grocery and restaurant spend alone reaching $2,500. Grocery and restaurant purchases earn 5x until that combined total hits $2,500, then later eligible grocery and restaurant purchases earn 2x. Grocery means merchants whose primary business is selling food, such as grocery stores, delis, produce shops, or specialty food stores; ready-to-eat meals and meal-delivery services can qualify. Grocery purchases at pharmacies, retailers, and big-box stores whose core business is not food do not earn this rate. Restaurants include restaurants, fast food, bars, nightclubs, and taverns. Restaurant orders placed through independent delivery companies may qualify; some delivery channels may not. Mastercard merchant category codes decide the category. Only one category applies to each purchase; if more than one could apply, you receive the rate that is more favourable to you.
2x: Gasoline and public EV charging at gas stations or certain big-box stores; recurring bills that a merchant automatically charges to this card; and eligible bookings made in the À la carte Travel agency section of the À la carte Rewards site. Not every automatic charge counts as a recurring bill. Eligible grocery and restaurant purchases after the billing-cycle gross total reaches $2,500 also earn 2x.
1x: Other eligible purchases. Cash advances, balance transfers, Mastercard cheques, interest, annual fees, foreign-currency conversion fees, insurance premiums, returns, paying the card balance with points, and credits from point redemptions do not earn points. Points post monthly if the account is in good standing on the statement date.

Travel Insurance
Official insurance certificate🔗
- Emergency Medical Care Outside of the Province of Residence
Coverage is for people under age 76 on the departure date who live in Canada and have their province’s public health and hospital insurance when the trip is booked and for the entire trip: the primary cardholder, a spouse travelling with the primary cardholder, and accompanying dependent children (a child born on the trip during the first 32 weeks of pregnancy can also be included). A spouse travelling without the primary cardholder is covered only if that spouse is also a cardholder. Authorized users who do not meet those rules are not insured under this benefit. Travel arrangements do not have to be charged to the card. The aggregate maximum is $5,000,000 per person per trip for reasonable, necessary medical care, hospital stays (private or semi-private rooms), and approved medical transport or repatriation after an illness or accident on the trip. Maximum trip length is 60 days at age 54 and under, 31 days at ages 55–64, and 15 days at ages 65–75; age 76 and over has no coverage. If the trip exceeds that maximum, there is no coverage for the entire trip. Pre-existing conditions in the 3 months before departure for people under 61, or the 6 months before departure for people 61 and over (physician visits, hospitalization, new medication or treatment, dose changes, and similar events, with certificate exceptions), may not be payable. Trips taken primarily or secondarily for medical care, pregnancy-related issues in the 8 weeks before the expected due date, high-risk activities, impaired driving or substance abuse, and non-urgent treatment that could wait until return are also excluded. Call CanAssistance (1-888-235-2645 in Canada or the U.S., or 514-286-8345 elsewhere) before incurring expenses whenever reasonably possible. Return the claim form within 30 days of the event and supporting documents within 90 days. The insurer pays or declines within 60 days of receiving a complete file.
- Trip Cancellation or Delay
The insureds are the cardholder and a spouse or dependent child travelling with the cardholder. Part or all of the trip cost must be charged to this card before departure. For covered causes listed in the certificate (such as an illness a physician recommends cancelling for, hospitalization, quarantine or death, illness of an immediate family member, involuntary job loss after more than a year with the same employer, a travel advisory for the destination, or a refused visa), cancellation or delay before departure is covered up to $2,500 per person for non-refundable prepaid trip costs charged to the card and necessary itinerary changes. If the departing flight is delayed more than 4 hours, or overbooking leaves no other flight within 4 hours of the original departure and you checked in at least 2 hours before departure, necessary meals and accommodation are covered up to $250 per person per day and $500 in total. There is no deductible. Illness or treatment in the 3 months before purchase, pregnancy in the 8 weeks before the expected due date, and listed high-risk activities may not be payable. Contact CanAssistance as soon as possible; submit the claim form and documents ideally within 90 days. The insurer decides within 60 days of receiving a complete file.
- Trip Interruption
The insured group is the same. Part or all of the trip cost must be charged to this card before departure. After departure, a covered interruption pays up to $5,000 per person for unused, non-refundable prepaid costs charged to the card and economy-class changes needed to continue the trip or return to the starting point. Necessary meals, lodging, and phone costs during an interruption or delayed return are covered up to $250 per person per day and $3,000 in total (expenses already paid under out-of-province emergency medical are not paid twice). If a travel supplier’s bankruptcy, receivership, or insolvency prevents completing the trip, unused non-refundable amounts charged to the card are covered up to $2,500 per person, subject to the insurer’s aggregate limits for all insureds. There is no deductible. The 3-month lookback for illness or treatment and the high-risk-activity exclusions are similar to cancellation coverage. Claim deadlines are the same.
- Delayed, Lost, Damaged or Stolen Baggage
The cardholder and travel companions are covered from departure until return. The certificate requires part or all of the trip cost to be charged to this card before departure; the product-page footnote also says lost or delayed baggage requires all transportation costs to be charged to the card. If the full cost of a common-carrier journey is charged to the card and checked baggage is delayed 6 hours or more before the scheduled return date, essential clothing and toiletries are covered up to $500 per person. Lost, damaged, or stolen baggage is covered up to $1,000 per person per trip and $250 per item. Replacement fees for a passport, driver’s licence, birth certificate, or visa total up to $50. Items of gold, silver, or platinum and watches count as one item, up to $250. There is no deductible. Electronics, glasses and contact lenses, currency and tickets, perfume and cosmetics, professional equipment, and baggage left in an unlocked vehicle are not covered. Report theft or vandalism to police immediately and get a report. Contact CanAssistance as soon as possible and submit documents ideally within 90 days.
- Vehicle Rental
The eligible rental must be paid entirely with this card or points earned on this card. Coverage applies to damage from an accident, fire, theft, or vandalism, plus reasonable and customary towing and the rental company’s loss-of-use fees. It is not public-liability insurance and does not cover other vehicles, other property, or bodily injury. The payout is limited to the vehicle’s manufacturer’s suggested retail price, up to $65,000 per rental. This coverage is first payer. There is no deductible. Coverage starts when the cardholder or a driver authorized on the rental contract takes possession and ends when the rental company recovers the vehicle. Renewing or signing a new contract that extends the rental beyond 48 consecutive days ends coverage. Trucks, trailers, off-road vehicles, stretch limousines, modified vehicles, vehicles with an MSRP over $65,000, RVs, antique cars (more than 20 years old or out of production for more than 10 years), motorcycles, and van uses listed in the certificate are excluded. Coverage does not apply if the rental contract is not followed, the driver is unauthorized, the driver is impaired, the vehicle is used off-road, or the loss is normal wear or mechanical failure.
- Medical, general and legal assistance
The official site includes medical, legal, and general assistance. For claims and assistance, call 1-888-235-2645 in Canada or the U.S., or 514-286-8345 elsewhere.
Shopping Insurance
- Purchase Protection and Extended Warranty
Eligible new movable property must be paid entirely with this card or points earned on this card. Purchase protection covers theft and breakage for 180 days after purchase, with no deductible. Extended warranty triples a manufacturer’s warranty that is valid in Canada, for a maximum of 2 extra years after the original warranty ends. If the original warranty is longer than 5 years, you must register the purchase with the insurer. Extended warranty covers only essential parts and labour for a mechanical breakdown or defect in the original warranty. Benefits are limited to the purchase price charged to the account (or that item’s share of a set). Purchase protection and extended warranty together pay a maximum of $60,000 while the account is active. The insurer may repair, replace, or refund the purchase price. Used items, motor vehicles and parts, heating and cooling equipment, items bought for business, gift cards, currency and tickets, plants, animals and perishables, tablets, phones, portable computers and software, drones, jewellery stolen from checked baggage (except hand luggage you supervise), sports equipment damaged through use, normal wear, mysterious disappearance, flood, and earthquake are not covered. Report theft or vandalism to police immediately. Keep the proof of purchase and original warranty, contact CanAssistance as soon as possible, and submit documents ideally within 90 days. If the claim is accepted, the insurer repairs, replaces, or refunds within 60 days of receiving a complete file.
- Repair or replacement of mobile devices
Coverage applies to breakage, loss, or theft. The full purchase price must be charged to this card, or every monthly payment on a financing plan must be charged to this card. A device with cellular capability must also be activated by a carrier. Devices bought as gifts can be covered, but the cardholder must file the claim. Coverage starts on the later of the 60th day after purchase or the date the second consecutive monthly plan payment posts to this card, and ends on the earlier of 2 years after purchase or the date a monthly plan payment is missed. The payout is the lowest of replacement cost (including tax, same brand and model or equivalent features), the repair cost charged to this card, or depreciated value (3% of the purchase price per month since purchase), minus the deductible, up to $1,000. The deductible is based on the device’s value excluding tax: $25 for $0–$200, $50 for $201–$400, $75 for $401–$600, and $100 above $601. The maximum is one claim per year and two claims every four years. Accessories, batteries, devices bought for business or resale, used, refurbished, or modified devices, new devices damaged in shipping, power surges, cosmetic-only damage, software or network issues, and normal wear are not covered. After the insurer accepts the claim, the replacement or repair cost must be charged to this card before payment. Report theft to police. Submit documents ideally within 90 days; the insurer decides within 60 days of a complete file.
