Update — August 3, 2026

American Airlines and Citi have announced a substantial refresh of this card. The changes below are announced changes; the product details in the main guide reflect the version that was publicly available when this article was updated.

  • The card will move from World Elite to World Legend, unlocking additional Mastercard benefits.
  • The annual fee will rise from $595 to $695 USD. The authorized-user pricing is unchanged.
  • New credits include up to $500 each year for American Airlines Vacations and up to $100 each year for eligible inflight and Admirals Club purchases. The existing 25% inflight discount will end.
  • Cardholders will receive Avis President’s Club status and Omni Hotels benefits, including Champion status and an annual Free Night Reward after an eligible stay of two or more nights.
  • The maximum Loyalty Point bonus will increase from 20,000 to 40,000. In addition to the existing 10,000-point bonuses at 50,000 and 90,000 Loyalty Points, new 10,000-point bonuses will be available at 165,000 and 240,000 Loyalty Points.
  • The AAdvantage Hotels and AAdvantage Cars earn rate will rise from 10x to 12x. Other earn rates are unchanged.
  • The annual Lyft credit will rise from $120 to $180; the monthly Grubhub statement credit will end.

The Citi / AAdvantage Executive World Elite Mastercard is American Airlines’ premium personal card. Its central benefit is a full Admirals Club membership, so it is designed for frequent American Airlines flyers rather than someone looking for the best return on everyday spending.

You also earn AAdvantage miles and Loyalty Points from card purchases, helping you work toward AAdvantage status without flying. The annual fee is substantial, but it can make sense if you would otherwise buy Admirals Club access or consistently use its airline benefits.

Why People Hold This Card

Admirals Club Membership

The primary cardholder receives an Admirals Club membership, with access to Admirals Club and participating partner lounges worldwide. The primary cardholder may bring up to two guests or immediate family members, subject to the lounge access rules in effect at the time of travel.

This is the main reason to hold the card. If you regularly fly American and value a quiet place to work, eat, or wait during connections, compare the card’s annual fee with the cost of buying an Admirals Club membership directly.

American Airlines Airport Benefits

When flying American Airlines, the card includes priority check-in, security screening, and boarding. It also gives the primary cardholder and up to eight companions on the same domestic reservation a free first checked bag.

The bag benefit is useful for families or groups, but the lounge membership is still the card’s defining perk.

Earning AAdvantage Miles and Loyalty Points

Purchase type Earn rate
Eligible AAdvantage Hotels and AAdvantage Cars bookings 10x miles (announced to become 12x)
Eligible American Airlines purchases 4x miles
Eligible American Airlines purchases after $150,000 in calendar-year spending 5x miles for the remainder of the year
All other purchases 1x mile

For every eligible AAdvantage mile earned from card purchases, you also earn one Loyalty Point. That makes the card meaningful for someone pursuing American Airlines status through a mix of flying and spending.

The current Loyalty Point bonus is 10,000 points after reaching 50,000 Loyalty Points in a qualification year, plus another 10,000 after reaching 90,000. The announced update expands the available bonuses as described above.

Credits and Travel Perks

Credits in the Current Version

  • Up to $120 in Lyft credits each year: Take three eligible Lyft rides in a calendar month to receive a $10 credit, up to $120 annually.
  • Up to $120 on prepaid Avis or Budget rentals: Book eligible prepaid rentals directly with Avis or Budget and pay with the card.
  • Up to $120 in Grubhub statement credits: Up to $10 per monthly billing statement on eligible purchases. This benefit is announced to end with the refresh.
  • Global Entry or TSA PreCheck: Up to $120 in statement credits every four years for an eligible application fee.
  • 25% savings on inflight food and beverages: Pay with the card on American Airlines flights. This is announced to be replaced by the new $100 annual inflight and lounge credit.

Travel and Purchase Protection

The card includes trip cancellation and interruption protection, trip-delay protection, lost-baggage protection, and worldwide rental-car coverage. It also includes purchase protection and extended warranty coverage. As with any credit-card insurance, read the benefit guide before relying on it: eligible trips, payment requirements, limits, and exclusions matter.

Is the Executive Card Worth Its Fee?

This card is most compelling if you already value Admirals Club access and fly American Airlines frequently. The lounge membership, free checked bags, priority airport services, and Loyalty Point earning can make the fee reasonable for that traveller.

It is less compelling as a general spending card. Outside American Airlines and the AAdvantage travel portals, most purchases earn only 1 mile per dollar. If lounge access and American Airlines status are not priorities, a flexible-points card is usually a better place for everyday spending.

The refresh makes the calculation more personal: the new credits and higher Loyalty Point bonuses could help frequent American flyers, but only if you will use them. Reassess the card when the new terms apply rather than assuming the headline value of every credit will translate into real savings.
