The property or shop must be owned or managed by Marriott International and its affiliates.

2x: Other eligible purchases earn 2 Marriott Bonvoy® points per CAD 1. A merchant not recognized in the Marriott category, a payment through a third-party payment account/service or mobile card reader, or an online store selling other merchants’ goods all earn 2x.

Funds advances, interest, balance transfers, Amex cheques, annual and other fees, travellers cheques and foreign-currency charges do not earn points. Refunds and credits reduce points.

Benefits and insurance

  • Annual Free Night Award

Starting in the second year, Cardmembers in good standing receive a Free Night Award about 8–10 weeks after the annual reset. It is valid for one year from the issue date and can be redeemed for a standard room (one or two occupants) at a participating Marriott Bonvoy hotel costing up to 35,000 points. The 35,000 points cover the room rate and applicable taxes, but not a resort fee. Both the booking and the stay must fall within that one-year validity period.

  • Marriott Bonvoy Elite status

You receive Silver Elite automatically. After the Basic Cardmember links this Card to their own active Marriott Bonvoy account, you receive 15 Elite Night Credits each calendar year. The maximum is still 15 nights per year even if you hold more than one Marriott Bonvoy consumer or small-business Card. You can reach Gold Elite by charging CAD 30,000 in net purchases before the annual reset, or by combining 10 qualifying paid nights in the same calendar year with this Card’s 15 Elite Night Credits (subject to other programme terms).

  • Amex Experiences™ and Amex Offers

You may be able to use selected Front Of The Line® Amex Presale Tickets™, Amex Reserved Tickets™ and offers in the Amex App / Online Services. Events, enrolment, eligible Cards, payment methods and deadlines follow the terms then in force.

Travel insurance

Official insurance certificate 🔗

  • Flight and Baggage Delay & Hotel Burglary Insurance

The full airfare must be charged to this Card, or redeemed with Marriott Bonvoy points as the certificate requires, with the required taxes charged to the Card. A missed connection, a flight delay of at least four hours, or denied boarding because of overbooking with no alternative within four hours of the original departure, may cover reasonable living expenses and sundries. If outbound checked baggage is delayed more than six hours after you arrive, you may be covered for essential clothing and sundries bought within four days of arrival. The combined flight- and baggage-delay limit is CAD 500 per occurrence. When accommodation is paid in full with this Card, personal property stolen in a hotel burglary during the stay is covered up to CAD 500 per occurrence.

  • Lost or Stolen Baggage Insurance

When the full airfare is charged to this Card, checked or carry-on baggage lost or damaged during covered air transportation is covered up to CAD 500 combined per occurrence for all insured persons; jewellery up to CAD 300, golf clubs and bag up to CAD 250. Electronics, cameras, cash and many other items are excluded.

  • Travel Accident Insurance

Charge the common-carrier fare (for example air, rail, ship or bus) to an American Express Card account before the accident. Eligible accidental death or specified dismemberment is covered up to CAD 500,000 per insured person; the loss must occur within 100 days of the accident. The Basic/Supplementary Cardmember, spouse and dependent children under 23 may qualify. Definitions and exclusions are in the certificate.

  • Car Rental Theft and Damage Insurance

Charge the entire rental to this Card, or pay with Marriott Bonvoy points and charge the required taxes to the Card as the certificate requires, and decline the rental company’s CDW/LDW. It applies to eligible cars, SUVs or minivans with an MSRP below CAD 85,000 excluding tax, for a consecutive rental of no more than 48 days. It can cover theft, loss, damage and eligible loss-of-use charges, with no deductible. It does not provide third-party liability coverage.

The current certificate for this Card does not include out-of-province/country emergency medical, trip cancellation, trip interruption or trip delay insurance.

Purchase insurance

  • Buyer’s Assurance® Protection Plan

When you charge the full price of an eligible new item to this Card, a complimentary original manufacturer’s warranty that is valid in Canada or the United States and lasts no more than five years can be extended by the length of the original warranty, up to one additional year. The limit is CAD 10,000 per item and CAD 25,000 combined per Cardmember per policy year for all occurrences. This is supplementary coverage; exclusions and claim deadlines are in the certificate.

  • Purchase Protection® Plan

When at least part of an eligible new item’s price is charged to this Card, you may have worldwide supplementary coverage for direct physical damage or theft within 90 days of purchase, up to CAD 1,000 per Cardmember per occurrence. Gifts can also be covered. Used/refurbished goods, cash and gift cards, loss or mysterious disappearance, and many other items are excluded. You must follow the certificate’s reporting and documentation rules.

Takeaway

This is Amex Canada’s only hotel co-brand, and it suits people who stay at Marriott often. One 35,000-point Free Night Award a year can already cover the annual fee. Stacking extra points onto that award can reach a 50,000-point night. The 15 Elite Night Credits are also useful if you need to keep or reach status. It is a worthwhile keep-in-the-drawer Card: you can use it mainly when you stay at Marriott.
