Travel insurance

Official insurance certificate 🔗

  • Common Carrier Insurance

Accidental death or dismemberment while boarding, travelling on or leaving a licensed common carrier is covered up to CAD 150,000 per insured person and CAD 500,000 for all insured persons combined for the same accident. Charge the full fare and applicable taxes to the Card, or use rewards with taxes and fees charged to the Card. The account must be in good standing. This coverage is unavailable to Quebec residents.

  • Emergency Medical Insurance

Reasonable and customary emergency medical expenses caused by a sudden, unforeseeable event outside the province or territory of residence are covered up to CAD 5,000,000 per insured person per trip. The maximum trip length is 15 consecutive days for travellers aged 64 or under on departure and three consecutive days for those aged 65 or older. Pre-existing-condition stability, pregnancy, alcohol use and high-risk activities can affect coverage. Contact Allianz before emergency treatment where possible; in a serious case, contact it within 24 hours of hospital admission and before surgery. The certificate’s 24/7 medical assistance is unavailable to Quebec residents.

  • Car Rental – Collision/Loss Damage Insurance

Covers theft or damage to a rental vehicle, eligible towing and loss of use. The rental period may not exceed 48 consecutive days, and the vehicle MSRP may not exceed CAD 85,000. Charge the entire rental to the Card and decline the rental company’s LDW or similar coverage. Vehicle, regional and other exclusions are set out in the certificate.

  • Trip Cancellation/Trip Interruption Insurance

For a covered reason, trip cancellation is covered up to CAD 2,000 per insured person per trip and CAD 5,000 for the same trip combined. Interruption or delay is covered up to CAD 5,000 per insured person per trip and CAD 25,000 for the same trip combined. Prepaid, non-refundable and non-transferable travel arrangements must meet the certificate’s Card-payment conditions; illness, death and other covered reasons must occur as defined in the certificate.

  • Flight Delay Insurance

When a scheduled commercial flight arrives or departs more than four hours late, additional reasonable accommodation and transportation expenses caused by a covered reason are covered up to CAD 500 per person and CAD 1,000 per trip combined. Entertainment expenses have a separate CAD 100 limit for all insured persons combined. A strike must begin after the first deposit or booking date. Flights already cancelled by the airline before departure and prepaid expenses are excluded.

  • Baggage Insurance

The full fare, including applicable taxes, must be charged to the Card before departure, and the account must be in good standing. Lost, stolen or accidentally damaged checked or carry-on baggage is covered up to CAD 1,000 per person and CAD 2,000 per trip combined. If outbound checked baggage is delayed more than six hours before reaching the destination, essential items can be purchased up to CAD 500 per person and CAD 1,000 per trip combined, subject to the certificate’s timing conditions. Jewellery, cameras, electronics and other items are excluded. This coverage is unavailable to Quebec residents.

  • Hotel Burglary Insurance

Personal property lost, stolen or damaged because of a burglary at travel accommodation during the stay is covered up to CAD 2,500 per occurrence for all insured persons combined. The full accommodation cost and applicable taxes must be charged to the Card. The insured person must be a Canadian resident and the account must be in good standing. Cash, tickets, consumables and unexplained loss are excluded. This coverage is unavailable to Quebec residents.

Travel coverage is underwritten by CUMIS General Insurance Company and administered by Allianz Global Assistance. The application page warns that new Quebec applicants do not receive travel insurance. Notify Allianz as soon as possible after a loss; the certificate generally requires notice within 30 days and written proof of loss within 90 days, with both deadlines no later than one year after the incident.

Purchase insurance

  • Purchase Security Insurance

A new item is covered for theft or damage during the first 90 days after purchase when a Canadian resident charges the full price to the Card, or uses rewards with taxes and fees charged to the Card. The limit is CAD 1,000 per account per 12 consecutive months, with a CAD 60,000 lifetime maximum shared with extended warranty coverage. Loss, items while held by a third party for mailing or transportation, cash, gift cards, used items, wear and tear and business-use property are excluded.

  • Extended Warranty Insurance

An eligible item’s original manufacturer’s warranty can be doubled for up to one additional year, and the original warranty must be valid in Canada. The limit is CAD 25,000 per account per 12 consecutive months, with a CAD 60,000 lifetime maximum shared with Purchase Security. If the original warranty lasts more than five years, register within one year of purchase. Lifetime warranties and coverage after a manufacturer goes out of business are excluded.

  • Mobile Device Insurance

For a lost, stolen or accidentally damaged phone, the limit per claim is the lowest of the depreciated value, repair or replacement cost, and CAD 1,500, less a 10% deductible. There is at most one claim per account in 12 consecutive months and two in 48 months. For a full-price purchase, the Card must pay for the device and it must be activated with a Canadian wireless provider; coverage begins on the 91st day after purchase and lasts up to two years. For an instalment purchase, a Canadian wireless provider must provide the contract and every monthly wireless bill during the contract must be charged to the Card. Obtain Allianz approval before repairing damage. After loss or theft, notify the wireless provider to suspend service within 48 hours, and report theft to the police within seven days.
