Everyday spending
5x: Spending in Canada that the Visa network codes correctly as dining earns 5 BMO Rewards points per $1. The first $6,000 in eligible spend each calendar year (January 1–December 31) qualifies; after that, this category earns only 1x. Dine-in, restaurant takeout, and delivery listed on the product page still have to match Visa’s dining MCC.
5x: Spending in Canada that the Visa network codes correctly as grocery earns 5 BMO Rewards points per $1. The first $6,000 in eligible spend each year qualifies; after that, it earns only 1x.
5x: Spending in Canada that the Visa network codes correctly as gas earns 5 BMO Rewards points per $1. The first $20,000 in eligible spend each year qualifies; after that, it earns only 1x.
5x: Spending in Canada that the Visa network codes correctly as transit earns 5 BMO Rewards points per $1. The first $20,000 in eligible spend each year qualifies; after that, it earns only 1x. Whether public transit and rideshare qualify also depends on Visa’s merchant classification.
1x: Other eligible purchases earn 1 BMO Rewards point per $1. Points are credited to the primary cardholder’s BMO Rewards account only if the account is open and in good standing both when you spend and when the statement is issued.
After you add additional cards, BMO’s current terms list a 10% points-earning bonus as an introductory feature. It applies to the existing card-accelerator spend on both the primary card and additional cards. The terms do not publish an end date, and the arrangement can change.
Benefits and insurance
- Anniversary Lifestyle Credit
Complete one purchase of at least $50 in each account anniversary period to receive one $50 statement credit. The first anniversary period runs from the account-opening date to the first annual-fee renewal date, then resets each year on the anniversary. The credit posts within two billing cycles after the annual fee renews, and the account must be open and in good standing. You can receive it once per anniversary period. Switching away and back, or cancelling and reapplying, does not let you receive it twice in the same anniversary period.
- Visa Infinite Benefits
This card can use Visa Infinite Luxury Hotel Collection, Dining Series, Wine Country, entertainment perks, Troon Rewards Silver Status, and 24/7 Visa Infinite Concierge. Hotel, dining, golf, and event benefits follow Visa’s participating merchants, enrolment, and then-current terms, and they can change.
- Instacart+ Membership & Monthly Credit
The website currently lists six months of Instacart+ and a $10 monthly Instacart credit for eligible BMO credit-card holders. You must enrol first. Eligible cards, activation windows, and Instacart’s other limits follow the then-current terms on that offer page.
- Avis and Budget car-rental discounts
Prepaid Avis rentals booked with this Card can be up to 30% off the base rate, and non-prepaid bookings at least 10% off. Budget is up to 35% prepaid and at least 10% non-prepaid. The discount applies only to the base rate and is subject to booking, location, and rental-company terms.
- BMO PaySmart instalment plan
Eligible recent purchases of at least $100 can be converted into a BMO PaySmart instalment plan in online banking. The applicable term, fees, and other terms appear only when you set up the plan.
Travel insurance
Official insurance certificate 🔗
- Out-of-Province/Country Emergency Medical Insurance
Canadian residents under 65 on the departure date, covered by a Canadian government health plan for the entire trip, and with an account in good standing can receive sudden emergency medical coverage of up to $5,000,000 per person per trip for the first 15 consecutive days after leaving their home province or territory. The trip does not have to be charged to this Card. Contact the Operations Centre within 24 hours of a medical emergency, or as soon as reasonably possible. Pre-existing conditions, travel against medical advice, pregnancy limits, alcohol or drug abuse, high-risk activities, and incidents related to a Government of Canada travel advisory may not be covered. An extension must be requested by phone before day 15 ends, and the premium must be charged to this Card.
- Car Rental – Collision/Loss Damage Insurance
A Canadian-resident primary cardholder must sign a non-renewable agreement with a commercial rental company, charge the full rental including taxes to this Card, and decline the rental company’s CDW/LDW. You can rent only one vehicle at a time, for no more than 48 consecutive days. Coverage can include theft or damage to a rental with an MSRP of no more than $65,000, valid towing, and loss-of-use. It does not provide third-party liability, property-damage, or personal-injury liability coverage. Rentals longer than 48 days, rental-agreement breaches, off-road use, and vehicle categories listed in the certificate are not covered.
- Common Carrier Insurance
Canadian residents must charge the full common-carrier fare including taxes to this Card, and the account must be in good standing. An accidental injury while boarding, riding on, or leaving a licensed aircraft, bus, taxi, train, cruise, or similar common carrier that causes death or a specified loss of limb, sight, hearing, or speech listed in the certificate is covered up to $500,000 per person. The combined maximum for all insured people in the same accident is $1,500,000. Only the single highest applicable loss is paid, and the loss must occur within one year of the accident.
- General claim conditions
Under this certificate, written claim notice is due within 30 days of the incident, and satisfactory proof of claim within 90 days. If that is not reasonably possible, submit the materials as soon as you can, and no later than one year after the incident. The insurance is generally supplementary to other available insurance, compensation, or refunds.
Purchase insurance
- Purchase Security Insurance
Canadian residents who charge the full purchase price of a personal item or gift, including taxes, to this Card, with an account in good standing, have worldwide coverage for theft or damage for 90 days from the purchase date. The insurer may repair, replace, or reimburse the purchase price. Purchase security and extended warranty share a lifetime maximum of $60,000 per account. Cash, tickets, animals and plants, consumables or perishables, online purchases not delivered and accepted, jewellery/furs in baggage not in your personal care, and items left behind are not covered.
- Extended Warranty Insurance
The payment rules are the same as purchase security, and the original manufacturer’s warranty must be valid in Canada. Coverage doubles the original warranty, up to one extra year, and pays the lower of repair or replacement cost for items the original warranty covers. If the original warranty is longer than five years, you must register with the Operations Centre within one year of purchase. Lifetime-warranty goods, warranties after the manufacturer has gone out of business, and items the original warranty did not cover are excluded. This benefit shares the $60,000 lifetime account maximum with purchase security.
- Mobile Device Insurance
Canadian residents who charge the full purchase price of a new phone, smartphone, or tablet to this Card, or finance it through a fixed-term Canadian wireless contract and keep charging the monthly wireless bills to this Card, can have worldwide coverage for loss, theft, or accidental damage. Coverage for a device paid in full starts on day 91 and lasts up to two years. Coverage for a financed device starts with the first related transaction and lasts up to two years. Each claim is limited to $1,000, with at most one claim per account every 12 months and two claims every 48 months. Payment deducts 2% depreciation for each completed month and a 10% deductible (minimum $25). Repair or replacement must be approved first. Business, resale, used, or refurbished devices, accessories, batteries, and laptops are not covered.
