Neo Financial is a fintech company founded in 2019 and headquartered in Calgary, AB. It is still relatively small, but some of its products have distinctive features.

Neo Chequing

Neo Chequing has no monthly fee or minimum deposit requirement, and deposits are protected by the CDIC. The account also comes with a physical Neo Money Card:

  • It is a prepaid card, so it does not require a credit check and cannot help you build a credit history.
  • Earn 1% cashback on gas and groceries, subject to a monthly cap.
  • Earn higher cashback rates at Neo Partners.
  • Cashback is credited immediately instead of waiting for the end of the billing cycle.

🏦 The current (October 20, 2026) sign-up offer is $125:

  • Spend $1,000 in your first 3 months with the Neo Money Card or another Neo credit card to earn $100.
  • Get another $25 through the blog’s partner cashback site.

【June 23, 2026 update】 Joint accounts are now available: there is no monthly fee, and each account holder gets a Money Card.

Neo Savings

The interest rate depends on your balance:

Deposit balance Interest rate
$0 – $4,999.99 2%
$5,000 – $19,999.99 2.50%
$20,000 + 2.75%

🏦 The current (October 20, 2026) sign-up offer is $80:

  • Get $80 through the blog’s partner cashback site.

Neo Credit

Neo Financial also offers several in-house credit cards:

  • They run on the Mastercard network, so acceptance is broad.
  • There is no annual fee, and spending earns cashback.
  • Some partner merchants offer very high cashback rates.
  • Cashback has no stated cap, arrives promptly, and can be transferred to a Neo Money Account at any time.

I had some reservations about this card: the cashback design was complicated, with different merchant-by-merchant deals instead of category rates. Once all the overlapping perks were recalculated, it became hard to follow. In my view, a straightforward category-based structure like a mainstream credit card would be more appealing to new users.

The structure is now somewhat simpler. Cards come in Mastercard, World Mastercard, and World Elite Mastercard tiers, and each card offers different rewards plans: Shop & Dine, Gas & Grocery, and Everywhere.

If you live in a major Canadian city and the merchants you visit are Neo Partners, the return can be very good. Cashback of 8%–15% is common, and a card may be worth considering. For example, at a shop I visit, my phone immediately shows a 10% cashback credit after I pay.

There is also a secured-card version for people with no credit history or a very short one. It is similar to the regular version, but you need to keep a certain amount in your Neo Money account, and the cashback rate is 0.5%.

Neo is also working on new cards. The blog previously reported on Neo’s plans for a Cathay co-branded card, which was something I was looking forward to.

【August 9, 2024 update】 Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen was added as a partner merchant: earn 10% cashback on the first purchase and 6% thereafter. Not bad.

Neo Invest

  • It is offered in partnership with OneVest.
  • You can open a TFSA, RRSP, or regular personal account.
  • Fees are low.
  • The minimum investment is low.

Neo Mortgage

  • The process is simple and fast, and can be completed online.
  • Neo says its rates can be better than those at traditional banks.
  • It works with different financial institutions.

Summary

Neo credit cards have a few distinctive features. If you like trying new shops or often visit Neo Partners, one may be worth considering.

Other Updates

【August 23, 2024 update】 Neo advertised a new cashback system based on the balance in your Neo account. This was also my speculation about the “up to 5%” mentioned in my preview of Neo’s new WEMC. The structure was:

Neo balance Gas Groceries Everyday spending
0 1% 1% 0%
$1000 1.5% 1.5% 0.5%
$3000 2% 2% 0.5%
$5000 3% 3% 1%
$10,000 4% 4% 1%

【January 6, 2024 update】An easy $150

【January 6, 2024 update】 Thanks to group member 樊校长 for sharing this easy $150. There was no reason to leave it unclaimed: register with the trial promo code and then open a Money Account. (Not available in Quebec.)

When registering for Neo Financial, or afterwards under Profile → Promotion, add the promo code V1RG67NMMHISA to see the offer: deposit $50 into a new Money Account and get $150.

⚠️ The Money Account and HISA have no monthly fee and no hard pull. Community reports said you did not need to open HISA to receive the $150.

⚠️ When opening the Money Account, you can choose not to get a physical Money Card right away in case a card promotion becomes available later. Other community reports mentioned a $100 promotion for getting the Money Card.

⚠️ Some community reports said that being referred could make you ineligible for the $150 offer. Register directly and add the promotion code instead.

⚠️ Thanks to group member 羊毛格子 for testing this: after registering directly, adding the promo code, and successfully receiving the $150, you could still add a referral code and see promotions for other Neo products.
